doesnt seem like a big deal to me but rules are rules and on most forums you dont have a real choice which ones you choose to follow....

That and various things are tied to Reps here.

Help people and hopefully they will Rep you, not to much else to it, with time it will grow.
Well if you lot have problems with illegitimacy, make it so that you can only register w/ a real email add. Ie NO hotmail, gmail, free email etc. Thats the best and easiest solution to the problem.

Okay. First, it's not a vote. It's just a way of saying thanks, but in public.

And to answer your question, have you even read the Reputation Defined thread? It's not very long and it's a good read.

Quote:
When should Rep be given?
Reputation should be given to members who make posts that are beneficial to the forum and it’s membership. When you give rep, keep in mind that members with a high rep will be perceived as "top members" in the forum. Give rep wisely!

When should it NOT be given?
Reputation SHOULD NOT be given for matters of personal gain. This includes giving rep to friends for any reason, for gmail accounts or anything else that does not benefit the membership as a whole.

Reputation Etiquette
- Do not beg for rep.
- Do not hold grudges with rep. Give rep to ANYONE who posts something that deserves acknowledgement.
- Do not create multiple accounts to give rep to yourself. You will get caught.
- Do not give rep to a post of a member just because you like them. The POST itself should be worthy of the rep.

HELL NO that's not a good idea! I've had my hotmail address for going on 7 years now. It's the only one I have. I HATE when sites say my email addy is not accepted just because it's hotmail. I'd rather a confirmation email or something, not just a general "no". I'm a real person with real questions and real answers. Why should I not be given a fair shake just because I use hotmail and I happen to like it?

Those are highly debatable. As the user i get to decide what deserves acknowledgement and what is worthy. So do you. I really dont like the air about this. I mean, my sig was a reminder. Its not like i was saying 'ill rep you if you rep me'.

Oh I just have to share the thread because there is a similar thread here but I don't know what exactly goes on in there.

I feel that this issue concerns the community as a whole, and thus must no longer be simply whispered about and only discussed in chat or journals where a limited few can see it or care to look.

Our system is broken and it needs to be fixed.
Our rep system, that is.

It has been some time now since the spam threads in the music sections of the forum have been closed down. However, the damage has been done, and the the exploitation of the the rep system continues.

If you are somehow unfamiliar with how this worked, here is a simple run down:

* Song of the Moment (aka Spam of the Moment)

1) Person posts a 1-3 (depending on their set up style) line post consisting of the name of the song they are listening to, along with perhaps the band and album.

2) People view this and... OMG REPS FOR JUST LISTENING TO MUSIC & TELLING US ABOUT IT1111!!!!!!!11111ONE!!!!ELEVEN111!!!!EXCLAMATIONS

3) Someone else does what the person in step 1 did.

4) Step 2 happens again, then Step 3 again. And it just alternates in a never ending loop of pointless posts and even more pointless repping for listening to music.

I mean honestly... reps for listening to music? I do that in my car on the way to school and to work. It is something most people do throughout the day. Maybe they should have been handing out reps for just breathing too.
Also, similar scenarios exist with the Band Name Game (yes, Spam Name Game) thread, as well as the Lyrics Posting thread. Thank goodness they are all gone.

* Another problem is all this "rep me back!!!" and "return the reps!" nonsense.

NO

That's a bad forum user!

People do not deserve to get rep just because they gave it out. People should get rep for making at least semi-decent posts that you enjoyed reading, can relate to, or made a valid point or impact. NOT just for posting in a thread. People make stupid or pointless posts all the time, and they get reps just for making them. Why? All that does is say "Here is some kudos for being an idiot!" or "Have some props for repeating what someone else just said!"

But there's no need to remind. It dirties the whole forum. So they cut it at the hilt to prevent it from getting out of hand with begging. It's just a low move. No one is penalizing you for wanting rep. It'll come with time.

I don't really look too much at the rep system anyway. I already know most of the people that I can trust.

But for those that do not know too many people on here yet, two better barometers than the rep system is how many posts a member has and how long they have been around. Even if a member has only a hundred posts, if they have been around OCN for more than a year they are probably not a noob anymore, and certainly not in it for some rep points.

I also seen a post last week where the OP stated "help will be rewarded". People need to understand even statements of this nature is borderline against the TOS because it obviously implies that the responders will receive rep in return. After all, what else are they going to reward you with?

Anyway, after this stuff combined with all the drama last week with a certain long-term member I am starting to get concerned that we need more mods.

Its the only system that works. On overclockersAU (Australian) we have to front up legit emails to control spamming and harrasment. Free emails = multiple accounts. Multi accounts = rep spamming. Whats to stop me right now, creating another hotmail account and repping myself? Nothing. That solves probably 75% of the repping problems here. Its a solution that i would like to see any of the admins comment on.
