Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm certainly not an expert.
I know it's on phase, and he's getting nowhere near that. I'm just talking about highest clocks.
Oh and Chozart, I'm not giving any flack, this is just my 2 cents.
No flack taken Discussions are always good.

Yes, if you put it under water or phase, the QX9770 is the clear winner (esp. under phase). The reason is that temperatures are more or less eliminated from the equation, and the Q9770 runs away fast in that case.

However, under air (even with the best air cooler), temperatures are the limiting factor, and in that case, it's close to a tie.

Thus, if you would have said 'high-end water-cooling' or 'phase', I would not even have argued with you

Thread Starter
The only thing that plagues my decision is the closeness of Nehalem. Its a pain in my decision. I might have to go Q9550 then 3.2ghz Nehalem in 2009.

If it were me? Don't waste the money, buy an "inexpensive" 45nm quad, clock it to shoot, even as "fast" as the 9770, and save yourself the cash. They don't call it "extreme" for no reason, extreme price, needs extreme cooling to be able to overclock it past the capability of a "slower" chip. I have no problem laughing at people with "extreme" duals, as I stomp them @ 4.4Ghz with my couple hundred dollar chip. Niiicceee... Also have a G0 Q6600 that'll murder a ton of "extreme" chips too...

Edit - We're still talking about air/water, not "extreme" cooling conditions like phase or liquid nitrogen.

Thanks to whoever deleted my original post in this thread, it is greatly appreciated when I can not even comment, which in turn will make other users and I (am not alone) visit the site less and less. I simply stated the EXACT same thing as chozart and my post gets deleted? o.0

to the OP:
what's this research you refer to? enlighten us all.

Q9770 is a good chip if you have really good cooling (WC/chiller/phase)
not if you use air cooling

assuming you are overclocking

if you aren't overclocking then the 300% price increase for 150% performance increase *might* be worth it to you.

how much faster is the qx9770 over the qx9650 on say water cooling? To the person who said we would be jealous of his temps in canada I dunno about you but I have ac and I would rather be in a confortable temperature house then be in a room that I have to wear a big coat just for the sake of overclocking MAYBE a tad bit more.
