[Giz] Walmart Talks Geek Squad Knockoff - Page 7

Alright seriously here....I've read through this whole discussion, and I've got a few things to point out:

Yes, Wal-mart is the devil. They are an evil coorporation. However...can't we also say that about Microsoft? I mean c'mon, look at what they did to Apple so many years ago! All big businesses step on the little guy...that's how they make profit.

Also:
I read a comment about only stupid people go to Wal-mart, or something about people without higher knowledge are stupid, or something to that effect (roughly on page 2 I think). And I for one take major offense to that. I go to Wal-mart to do all my shopping. Sure, I hate the way they do business. I also hate the rude customers and lack of service. However their prices cannot be beat (locally at least). Their "professionals"...are completely ignorant and usually don't know anything.

Now with the above being said....I'm 22 years old. And guess what, you may think of me as a "stupid" person because of my lack of higher knowledge. I didn't even graduate high school. And that my friends, is why that comment upset me. There's absolutely NO REASON to be bashing on people that don't have higher knowledge...or even a high school diploma. There's a LOT of people out there that didn't finish.

Also (on subject):
Their computer department is absolutely rediculous (spellcheck FTL). They sell ONE video card at my local Wally world. And guess what...its a GeForce FX5500 PCI, and they claim that its the best video card for Vista!!! And they sell that Vista badged pile for $119.99. Creative Audigy SE sells for $69.99 there because of the Vista badged junk. I for one can't wait until this "Geek Squad" alternative shows up, just so I can redicule them.

I went in there one day, and asked for an external USB hub (my exact words). The idiot guy that was the MANAGER of the home electronics / computers section, showed me to a freakin RCA patch cable!!! I go, no. Wrong cord bud . And I found it myself, showed it to him, and said..."This is USB. Its for computers. You know, you plug things into it." He looked at me with a dumbfounded look like I was talking gibberish.

And that my friends...is my rant on the comments above, and the actual topic. I for one, just can't wait to see how this works out for them...and am wondering how much business I can steal from them by proving their "techs" wrong in front of customers, then handing out my number to the customers. Hey...its worked for me at Best Buy (idiot thought Arctic Silver THERMAL GREASE was a new kind of video card).

I'd apply for a job there myself, but I'm not even good enough to work as a JANITOR THERE! I've applied for ANY openings there 3 different times now. Been through the entire application / interview process. They say they can't hire me via a nice paper in the mail a few weeks later, after I've bugged them every day asking if I was hired yet.

I hate Wal-Mart....but I love their cheap prices!

Oh yea on the topic of Wal-Mart employees....they're not all morons. A fellow Electrical and Computer Information Engineering student I know works in the electronics department at Wal-Mart........so I guess it's random (like everything else in this world.)

With all due respect, you can't consider it help if it is bad information that is supplied to the consumer.

OMG!! I know you were being sarcastic, but my dad's old sony vaio that he bought like 5 years ago from BB had the DVD drive fail, and they could never get a new one working, so they replaced the computer! LOL

I must be lucky. At the Wal-mart in my town there are actually several people I would consider talking with about a computer related problem...I've tested and retested them by asking probing questions about what the store has to offer and what they'd do in X situation...cause I'm like that. lol.
The Dept. Manager is actually extremely knowledgeable about the products offered specifically, and knows a fair bit about pc's in general.

As for Wal-mart offering a geek squad...I've been thinking they should do this for years as it would, if implemented properly(Wal-mart doesn't do everything wrong...), be a great help to many a computer illiterate out there...I know too many people that have made mistakes in spending that could have easily been avoided if they'd have had access to someone with even SOME knowledge.

Like the guy who I offered to build a computer for, but he insisted he needed his computer immediately, so he drove to Best Buy and bought one. A month or two later his gf had me build her a computer for half of what he paid that outperformed his. lol
