most of the time its the latter, as nobody cares to overclock your laptop without you knowing (that was a joke)

Laptop manufacturer's are now employing a second BIOS lockout check on most, if not all, new laptops made.

This is due to the possibility (and it's happened, just remember) that data on them could be easily stolen by a suspect, terrorist or anyone else if they know they can quickly reset your BIOS password by taking a battery out. I mean, if they have intentions of stealing your data I'm SURE they know basic computer config/repair and would easily clear your BIOS password (by methods stated within the thread).

This has been going on now a few years and we've had to send laptops BACK to the manufacturer -or- a guy on eBay who charged like $50-$100 depending on brand (these were HP) and reset it.

In the last few days I've tried unsuccessfully to reset laptop BIOS passwords in a dozen or so instances trying all the methods mentioned as well additional ones. At the end of the day, to spare cost and my time, they were sent out to the manufacturer.

I wish you luck but your working with new technology to THWART such attempts as your trying. Hope you can get her unlocked but I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't depending on age of it.
