4 gega ram on winxp - Page 2

I had xp 64bit before I switched to Vista. XP64 was horrible. Save your self the trouble and get Vista since in the end you will probably switch to vista.

no, ALL 32-bit systems r limited to 4 gigs of address space. this address space is what is assigned 2 all things on ur computer, not just ur system RAM.

it's n a sitcky somewhere, but since no 1 reads stickies... if u have 4 gigs of system ram n ur 32-bit system, u will only b able 2 use about 75% of that 4 gigs... give or take. the reason is what i stated at top, other things like ur video card, sound card and basically anything that needs 2 b identified is assigned a certain amount of address space. now, since it can only use a MAX of 4 gigs, all the other stuff that is required 4 ur computer 2 run is assigned that adress space 1st, then the system ram takes what's left over... usually about 3 gigs.

get a 64 bit system if u want more than 2 gigs of ram.

*edit... added*

heres the thing. vista is a ram hog and will use all the ram you give it.
no, it's not. ppl need 2 learn things instead of just going by hear-say. vista utilizes ram n a very different way that previous vers of windows... it caches it. there's a service n XP called SuperFetch, that looks at what u do on ur computer and tries 2 anticipate what programs/files u r going use, so it loads up ur ram with all these files at startup so that when u actually do need them, ur computer won't have 2 search the hard disk and THEN load it n2 memory - it'll arleady b there.

Just one thing, If I were u, I would add a bigger Hard Drive, I dunno maybe 500GB, i say it because Vista takes a lot of space just for installing (don't get rid of your actual hard drives, just add another one with 500GBof space,a nd fo course, SATA) Also, u may wish to consider to either overclock ur CPU or get a new one.

XP x64 SUCKS, just install 4gb ram, you will still have ~3.3GB RAM, which is still better than 2gb and wont cost much more than 3gb. if you can, get vista 64, but its not really worth it if you already have vista x32 just for a few more MB.

However if you're doing some heavy 3D work, I'd suggest you go 4GB....since that's what you're asking anyway. Go 4GB of RAM and Vista x64. You'll be happy with it. If you've never used Vista before, it takes a LITTLE bit of getting used to. But for the most part everything's pretty much in the same spots as XP.

I for one, suggest you make the switch. Windows XP 64bit is absolutely HORRIBLE. There are a SELECT FEW people who don't have any problems with it. But about 99% of people who have tried XP 64, they hate it. Lack of driver support for the main thing.
If he's using it for Autodesk apps, there is still better support for XP from them.. I run 3ds Max and Maya on x64 and it's flawless. The applications as well as GPU support (Quadros and GeForce)

I may be the only person, but i'll recommend XP x64. With the next release cycle, we'll see what the deal is but for now, its better supported, and the user base is also still on XP, makes troubleshooting easier. (though Vista is being adopted, slowly)

Why is it sometimes called 32bit when other times people refer it to x86?
