i wouldn't be surprised if this was true. just look at the 9600GT (still the only 'true' 9-series core out). with half the shaders it can nearly match the perf. of the 8800GT and its atleast 200,000,000,000 times better than an 8600GT so....yeah quite possible

It's the die shrink of the G92 cards, so I'm thinking the die shrink of the GT200 should be very fast indeed.

Memory bandwidth isn't the only thing that effects the performance. Yes, the 2900XT had a ton of memory bandwidth, but there were other problems that held it back. To answer your other question, the 2900XT had a little more than 100GB/s of memory bandwidth.
