GeForce 9800GX2 Sudden FPS drops in all games.

Hi Guys,

I recently built a whole new PC, including a 9800GX2. My problem is that everything works fine apart from the fact that no matter what game I play or 3D app that I run I get really poor performance.

What happens is that the game will render just fine (Take AoC for example, i get 70fps in that with all settings on High) then every 30 seconds it drops to 1-3 FPS and stutters all the time. Then it recovers and goes back to 70fps only to drop again seconds later. This constantly happens no matter what i'm doing, be it a game or 3dMark. (My 3dMark score came out at like, 5k because of this).

I've tried running it in Multi-GPU and Multi-Display mode to see if that helps the issue, but its the same no matter what mode its in.

It's running temps seem ok. It idles at about 55 on the stock cooler with the fans at 100%, and all the time i was playing AoC the temps never rose above 60.

Here's my system:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 @ 2.50GHz
Mobo: MSI P7N Diamond
Mem: 4096 DDR2
GFX: XFX 9800GX2
PSU: Corsair 650w

Gfx Driver Verson: 7.15.11.7516

Please help, so far its like i've wasted €1.3k.

I experience this with my 8800 GTX. I would also like to know. But doesn't happen as much as its happening to you.

Well let me ask, I had a problem like this. do you have a program in your background of your computer that acquires info every few seconds (whether it be temp. or graphics data.)

I had a program like this and especially runnin fullscreen, every few seconds when the program got the data it would stutter down to like 2 fps

The only active programs at the time were:

Windows Sidebar
AVG
MSN Messenger
Firefox
nVidia Monitor (this was only active after i first notice the problem, as i wanted to check the running temps)

And all background processes?
Try closing everything you have open on your bar, and exit out programs like AVG while you try it. Just trying to zero down to the problem.

Also could u tell us what drivers ur using

Ok, i just killed all the other apps that were running, and still it wasn't any better.

I'm running the latest drivers from the nvidia site, you can see the version number in my original post.

Okay, I tried searching for an answer for you on google too. It could be a number of problems. Did you get this problem before you installed the latest drivers?
If you want to go as far to see if its the drivers, you should try installing diff. drivers like the Omega drivers.

This happened to an 8800GTS I used to have... Faulty PCI-E rails on the PSU were the cause of it for me.

Well honestly, i've literally put the PC together the other night, so the only drivers it's had installed are the latest nvidia ones.

What's the later Omega version?

So you reckon I should get a new PSU?
