New GPU.. compatible chip

Thread Starter
Hi, i'm building a new PC and wondering if I buy a 9800x2 Nvidia and have an ASUS P5E64 Evolution(X48 chip) would be OK???

Generaly if i use a mobo chip other than Nvidia 790 or 770 chip with an (e.g.) XFX 9800(not x2) would it be a problem???

Summing up,
x48 only for ATI???
Nvidia only for Nvidia Gpus????

OR
x48 compatible also with Nvidia but only for Crossfire and double(x2) core GPUs-like 3870x2...
nvidia compatible also with ATI but only for SLi and double(x2)
core Gpus-like 9800x2....

MAIN THING I WANT TO KNOW(the above are asked generally just to learn and understand stuff) IS: WILL AN ASUS P5E64 Evolution be Compatible with AN 9800x2????

THX IN ADVANCE~!

i think u got it right there
u can use any single video card on any motheboard (except if it's wrong standard , agp, pci, pcie etc)
but if u want to do dual video card like crossfire or SLI,
u need Crossfire board for Crossfire ATI card
and SLI mobo for SLI nvidia video card,
u cannot use Crossfire setup on SLI, tho u can use them as 2 separate video cards(won't combine to improve performance)

so if u want to add another 9800 to do SLI,
u will need to purchase a SLI support motherboard

im pretty sure the gx2 is considered sli and will not run on a non sli board. doesnt matter how many slots it takes.

also, u could consider ATI solution, HD4870 suppose to be a beast card and suppose to beat GX2 by good margin, and attractive price, if u interested

Oh thx for the replies... You both got the right spot... but i think mnishimura00's reply is what i wanted... SO IT"S CONFIRMED THAT even though the x2 GpUs systems take 1 slot it's considered SLi Or Crosfire... CORRECT???

And TripleC, i can't find that card anywhere in greece... so...

I had a radeon x550 and when I upgraded my board to the geforce 7050m chipset (nforce 630 I think) it just wasnt compatible. It POST'd the computer, but thats about it. Anything that actually utilized the card (games, even the windows score test thing) caused instant reboot. Had 3 different nvidia cards run great in there since. Best bet is to go with a card for whoever makes your board. Its the ONLY way to make absolutely sure that you have a compatible card.
