8600m GT 256mb drivers do not exist????

Thread Starter
hey ocn,

i tried to ditch some bloatware on a friend's new laptop by re-formatting.
although this worked, i found out after that nvidia doesn't support the 8600m for drivers (only 8700m was available and didn't work with me)

anyone with a lappy and this gpu find any drivers? the 8600m was a big selling point for this laptop and sofar i can't even use it

Nvidia doesn't officially support the mobile graphics cards in their standard Forceware drivers because some manufacturers will decrease the stock clocks to meet thermal requirements. You can use the drivers released by Nvidia, but you need to modify the inf file to add the 8600m to the supported devices list.

Here is a good website that provides that drivers and the modified INF file for you:

I have found that 174.74 gives me the best performance so far, and also keeps my temperatures reasonable while the card is overclocked. Hope this helps!

Not really. What if a OEM downclocked the card to meet thermal limit. You install Forceware drivers, then your GPU sets on fire because you´re GPU got OC´ed to hell with the ForceWare drivers. Then you want to return the laptop. Guess wut? You overclockeed it, no warranty for you sir!
