how important is NB and SB cooling?

Thread Starter
latley have have been into making thinks colder and noise is't really a issue to me.

I ask this bcause earlier i was just messing around with the cableing issues and my hang bumped the NB heatsinks and it was hot as hell to the touch. Is it ok for those to be that hot or should i look into a cooler for it.

When i touch the SB its not very warm at all plus my 8800gt is so close to it i dont think i could fit much there anyways. thanks

I'm pretty new to all this so if anything is wrong in my post feel free to point out my stupidity

Its good if your heatsink is hot. It means that heat is moving through it. You've only got problems if it burns you. If your concerned, add a fan, they are pretty cheap.

well if its that hot, you could look into some 3rd party coolers. and if i'm correct, if the nb is cool, youll have better chances of upping your fsb even more. someone correct me if im wrong.

As far as I'm aware, lower temps DO NOT increase performance. The only time temp affects performance is if you overheat.

yeah the NB is pretty hot. i can only hold the back of my finger on it for a few seconds before it gets to hot to stay there. I have pretty good cooling through my case. CPU idels at 39 so i dont think there is a real problem but just wanted to make sure.

Is there any suggestions for a good cooler?

thats what the inside looks like now

Hey Rock Star...first things first...the nb & sb are in fact very important as far as pc performance are concerned...while it can be said that the heatsink over both should convert heat is true.

However, if you can lower the temp of both chipsets you can effectively help to make your mb control settings ....which both chipsets generally control much more stable.

This in turn will allow for ever increasing higher oc'ing...in fact one way of obtaining the 3DMark06 top score was to put the cpu on DICE while putting the north bridge on phase change...while the south was wc.

Even if you have the best wc, tec, phase change or DICE on your cpu...without mod'ing the n/s bridges to exchange the higher increases in heat in relation to the oc'ing your system will hang crash as mine does occassionally when my water level gets low.

Whipple seems like you should have a much higher oc than what you got going at the moment...have you ever thought about updating to a better board? I have two Asus Maximus Extreme mb...one I am using the other is a brand new one sent to me from Asus directly as part of an exchange.

You would only need to get some ddr3 and you would have a fuzion water block already on the board which will allow you to get to 4+ghz...oc'ing

i have that MB

it should have come with a little fan that attaches over the NB, cools my just fine!

i can hold my hand around it and its barely warm.
i would definitely put that fan on. you don't want to burn anything out

$4 fan vs. $150 MB

tough choice!
