But I must agree, for gaming performance you really don't need much more than a dual core @ 3Ghz+, some nice SLI-ing GPU's and 4GB mem.
But I would wait for the 280GTX and see how it scores in games (fps-wise); maybe you need just one of them. I mean, my single 8800Ultra can still run any game maxed out @ 1920x1200 with 70fps+ (well, except Crysis obviously) so the 280GTX should so that even better. Besides anything over 100fps is just useless

because there is no point him spending ludicrous amounts of money when he can spend less for pretty much the same performance.

i think parts that have been suggested i.e going for 2 9800gx2 and cheaper/less hdd will be goood
