FSB CPU Question.

Thread Starter
A complete newb question I'm sure but could someone please fill me in. I've been reading posts and threads on overclocking for awhile now and am very impressed with how little i know and much the most of you do.

From all ive read and seen it would appear that a higher FSB is better for overclocking...right...wrong...not even close...

Is "Hyper Transport" and "FSB" the same thing when looking at processors on newegg? cause that's sure the way it seems...

Secondly if they are why does the amd quad 9850 have a Hyper transport (FSB) of 4000 yet an intel of similar ghz has only 1066 or 1333, and from what ive seen from here most people would point me in the direction of the Q9540 intel?

I thought that having a higher FSB would be better for overclocking?

At least one simple and one overly complicated answer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all in advance who read and responded to this.

the FSB has nothing to do with the HT for OC`ing
if you wanna OC you gotta up the FSB yeah.
and eventually up the voltage as well

anyways...welcome

That has something to do with how often the cpu "talks" with the rest of the mobo (i think...correct me if i`m wrong)
But either way, AMD and Intel use different names and techniques.

Lately Intel is just faster than AMD (and yes i had AMD before this so don`t whine that i`m a fanboy )

Thanks again. When i purchased and assembled my rig, my hardware knowledge was practically nothing(not that its much better), and i bought stuff cause the numbers were big and pretty not because they were good and from what my recent research has found, my computer is laughable compared to other rigs available at the time i got mine, both in price and performance. oh well. I'm happy with it for now, is there any real oc'ing options for me or not really? The most ive heard of is 3.2. Anybody know of higher? Will AMD use my Duel socket MOBO with quad's anytime in the near future?
thanks fanboy...

if you can change the fsb, Vcore, DDR2 settings + voltage in the bios than you can OC it
i think you can get it a bit higher...but i have no idea how fast the FX-74`s can go
just keep trying...as long as you don`t forget to watch the temps and keep stress-testing when u use new setting

Ok try lowering the hypertransport and up the FSB while giving it a little more voltage. I just read a little about your system it seems nice AMD took to long to drop the quads so your socket got left behind i think.
