Abit Quad GT (ICH8R) onboard raid-5 limited to 2TB?

Thread Starter
I'm thinking about upgrading my system to RAID-5 and am considering getting 3 or 4 1TB, 750gb, or 640gb hard drives. I've heard that this onboard raid controller on my Abit QuadGT X38 might have a limitation of 2TB... is this true?

If there is a limitation due to this not being a 64bit raid controller, am I limited to 2TB physical hard drive space (e.g. 2 x 1TB raid 1 or 3 x 640gb raid 5) or is it limited to 2TB usable space (e.g. 3 x 1TB raid 5 or 4 x 640gb)?

I don't think Vista x64 has any limitations so I'm hoping this raid controller doesn't either. Any insight into this before I make my purchase would be greatly appreciated

NTFS has a 2TB partition limit.

Yes but I could easily split the raid 5 volume into OS and Data partitions, so that's not a huge problem. I'm more concerned over the RAID controller having a 2TB limitation but I can't seem to find any definite info on this

Well the calculation of disk space for a RAID 5 array is:

(Number of drives - 1) * Smallest drive capacity

So for 3 750GB drives:

(3 - 1) * 750 = 1500GB (1.5TB)

Yup, I realize how its calculated, but with regards to the 2TB limitation on certain raid controllers (not sure if mine is included or not yet...) is the limitation calculated by physical hard drive space or usable space? Can I have 3 x 1TB drives giving me 2TB usable or since its 3TB of hard drives total is that not going to work since its over the 2TB limit of the raid controller? Thats my question...

That is a good question and I'm afraid I do not have the answer.

I'm sure that as long as the RAID detects no more than 2TB, it should be fine. I don't think the physical space of 3TB will cause any problems.

Any RAID/Storage experts know any answers?

Hopefully you are right

So the remaining question is: Does this ICH8R onboard raid have a limitation of 2TB per array? I can't seem to find this info anywhere

I think the ICH8R will do, yes. I think its part of the generation of chipsets that has the limitation in place.

Sorry, just to confirm: you do think the ICH8R raid has a limitation of 2TB? Just not sure I understood what you said above

Anyone else care to comment?

Edit: Seems it is limited to 2TB and max of 4 drives per array:
