Issues going from E6750 to QX6850

Thread Starter
So I thought I would be clever and replace my Core 2 Duo (which easily OCs to 3.75G) with a QX6850. I did check first and the QX6850 is on the compatible CPU list for my mobo. Everything was running fine when I shut down, pulled the 6750 and installed the 6850. Now I have no video out or indication (beep codes or video) that I am posting. I am not getting reboots like when something is pushed too far and won't post??? I did verify the DVI connector is inserted correctly. My sig is up to date except for the QX6850. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Reset your CMOS.
Did you put all settings to default before you turn it off and changed cpu?

Do you run BIOS version F4 or newer?

I think that you gonna have a problem OC that QX if you can get it started, because you only have a 4 pin cpu power, you should have 8pin, cpu TPD is 130W.

put the 6750 back in and put all bios settings to auto. Then put the QX in and if that doesn't work just reset all cmos (which puts everything back to auto anyway but you could have missed something little)..

As stated too the QX requires a much higher amount of power then the 6750 so don't expect to OC that as much without the added juice.

Did it end up working?

It was so f-ing hot last night, all I had time to do was install air conditioners so I could sleep without a bunch of whining from my wife and kids.

Hopefully tonight.

Also, one of the other engineers I work with suggested it may have to do with the TIM. So if resetting the CMOS doesn't do it, I will clean and reinstall the CPU and HSF.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

I switched cpus and it would power up but not send any signal to the monitor. I cleared the cmos and it then worked.

So after nearly stripping everything out and rebuilding my rig one piece at a time, I finally solved the problem. It is nothing more than my power strip. I found it because I was working in another room and when I plugged the AC cord directly into the wall, it works with both CPUs. I have replaced it (the power strip) and everything is working again.

I also bought a new motherboard that will do the QX6850 justice and has an 8 pin 12V-ATX header.

Thanks again for the inputs.
