odd Q6600 temp

Thread Starter
hi everyone i'm kinda new in overclocking since it's my first attemp , i have a q6600 G0 . that i overclocked to 3.42 Ghz, i know it's a reasoneble clock , but i have some questions

on both the bios and Hardware monitor it only shows on idle the cpu is 30 c and all 4 cores are around 40 c , but when under load the cpu is only 40 c and all 4 cores are around 60 c

i know that this are quite normal but the thing is my cpu has a 1.325 vid , and i know that it's quite a high vid , so i was wondering if the temp is a glitch ?

my specs are
Mobo : Abit ix38 quad gt
cpu : q6600 G0 3.42 ghz , vid 1.325 running on 1.47v , fsb 380 x 9
heatsink : zalman 9500a
ram : corsair 6400-c4dhx , running on ddr2 900 5-5-5-18
psu : fsp bluestorm II
case : icute , forgot the series
fan : 4 120mm vantec fans

so does anyone have any advice or suggestion on what i should do , also is it bettter to use ddr2 800 on 4-4-4-12 or ddr2 900 on 5-5-5-18

thanks for answering

Worry about the core temps...

That CPU is a different sensor not on the die I don't think.

As for the RAM, not too much of a difference. Try tightening your timings. You should be able to squeeze a 4 out in there somewhere.

well i'm after long term oc, so i guess 3.4 ghz is good enough , what i was wondering about is which one is better, ddr2 800 on 4-4-4-12 or ddr2 900 on 5-5-5-18

i managed to run prime95 blend test stable for 1 hour so far then stopped it since i wanted to play on it, i guess i'll try to prime 95 for 8 hours tonight

also i have a difference in core temp , got core 1 and 2 at 36 c and core 3 and 4 at 41 c , i guess the ihs is a little uneven , but i think it's still fine, if i lap my heatsink will the temp go down more ?

Yeah it's going to be uneven though. They aren't always on the same temp. Just varies on how much they work, or need to work. Opening a word file won't use more than one core probably. And about your RAM, that 100 MHz OC isn't too bad. You should be able to have 5-4-4-15 still. I had 667 and had it to 800+ and was at 4-5-5-31. That last number doesn't matter (tRAS). Set it as high as you can, it increases stability a lot.

Allot of the times with the Q6600's two core's will be similar in temps while the other two are similar. IE: core 1 and 0 may be 30c and core 2 and 3 will be 34c.

It is very normal!

I don't know if ram timings or just mhz, which one is faster, but if you could get 900mhz running 4-4-4-12 it would be the best all around. I know certain timings play a huge roll in system speed, so if you can have fast ram and lower timings the better! Hope this helps!

yeah thx for all the tip , i tried using ddr2 900 with 4-4-4-12 once, but i always got a bsod , so i kinda kept the timings on auto for now, which seems to be stable so i think i'm gonna keep it since it's not that much of a difference

After 1 core fails, it's pointless to continue testing because the other cores are considerably less stressed.
