While this idea would keep major titles coming to the PC, I don't see it as anywhere near a sustainable way to do business - as we have seen for titles like Halo 2. Put simply the PC gamers aren't going to keep ponying up $50 a copy for warmed up console leftovers, which means that the game companies won't continue to make them.

PC Gaming isn't going anywhere, but I do believe that it's going to have to change. The ray-trace advocates are right, the development costs have to be reversed and the largest cost is animating for the rasterization process. Ray tracing can cure that.
Not only that, but ray tracing scales much better than rasterization, it'll make it easier to scale the settings for different systems and easier for consumers to gauge their hardware.

Unfortunately we're still far away from full real-time ray tracing, maybe two years at best.

The more people pirate the more stringent the technology to catch the pirates will become. People are stealing money from wealthy companies and they are finally seeing it hit their bottom line. They have to do something about it before shareholders start selling their stock.

He sees a trend in gaming: titles begin life on consoles, and are then improved for the PC.
That's a fancy way of saying "ported" if I ever heard one.

Yes and no. Simply describing something as "ported" does not say whether it was just made to function or actually improved. A port of a console game to the PC doesn't have to be bad.

You know, that's what's funny, a lot of games on the so-called 'next gen' consoles lag. Even though the hardware specs and capabilities have been known for four, nearly five years..

I think the partially prerendered footage that hyped these consoles have made it impossible for developers to develop titles actually optimised for them, because they'd just look underwhelming.
None of my 360 games lag?

Bah, don't give them that much credit. If they add one or two new levels (which are likely to be DLC from the console anyway), it's still the same game...thus, a port.

I'm not saying it's bad per se, I'm just saying that it's just a port. The article's suggestion that the originally developed version is just a "draft" and the console version is the "improved" version is just asinine. No one would have taken this like of reasoning seriously if it had been suggested in the converse, that console ports of PC games are actually the "improved" version of the PC's "draft" version.

If anything, these "enhanced" versions on the PC are more akin to the "director's cut" of a movie. And I don't know about you, but most director's cuts I've seen do not seem "better" than the original version.

(Getting way off topic, but this is fun: The exceptions I can think of are Blade Runner and Dune. Superman II could have been better than the original if Richard Donner had not decided to replace every last shot that he had an alternate for...Donner's version of the movie is better, but in many cases the individual shots in the original version are far superior.)

Selling games as a "service" with excessive authentication in most cases has just turned people off to them. How many people like the process in Mass Effect.

Steam probably has the best positioning to make this happen, I kind of like having some games on it (was able to get COD4 at 11PM) and no DVD switching, but I kind of like having all my discs.

Offcourse he is going to say this. He wants people like us to continue to buy incomplete graphics card which have immature drivers and end up giving false benchmark scores. People forget that NVIDIA(as well as ATi) make profit from us buying their cards so he is trying to protect the companies profile so people continue to provide support. If he was to say that his cards suck or consoles are the king then he would be fired the next day LOL .

This is a load of crap really, if he feels the consoles game doesn't threaten PC gaming then how come the ratio for PC games compared to console games is soo less? There are small developers yes however, how many AAA titles make it to the PC? Hardly any The number of PC games have signifcantly dwindled in the past year. Its only a few developers who wanted to sell the games.

To me still consoles will and have already overshadow PC gaming. Its a sad fact however, thats the truth.

Hah, talk about lag on next gen consoles! I've recently bought a PS3 and am currently playing GTA4. My god does that game drop to 20ish FPS in some parts. Also I've observed Rainbow Six Vegas 2 subject to a fair amount of lagging. I guess 8 cores can't do all the work when you're running a modded 7800
