QUESTION: 8800GT or HD 3870 Crossfire?

Thread Starter
Hi All,
I am upgrading my 8600GT. Was going to use EVGA's step up to get the 8800GT for $100, but I think eventually I will want 2 graphics cards (leave headroom).

My P5K3 Deluxe only supports crossfire, so despite the decreased performance of a HD 3870, I would be running (2) 8x 8x HD3870 instead of (1) 16x 8800GT.

I can get the HD 3870 on Newegg for $130. I will OC whichever one I get.

Sooo.... which would you choose, and would crossfired HD 3870's give me a significant improvement over the single 8800GT (remember the HD 3870's run at 8x when in crossfire)?

And would it be worth the $160 more to crossfire?

Any comments would be appreciated!

With the P5K3 it would be 16x 4x for xfire.

So by adding an additional card, you are only getting 4x speed? Is that really worth it?

I may not Xfire for some time, would the single 3870 suffer in comparison to an 8800Gt?

Also, would you pay the extra $160 to have another 3870 running at 4x? Wouldn't the 8800 GT be almost equal?

MUCH Thanks for all the help guys!

When you turn AF on, yes. If you aren't going SLI/CF, I'd go with the single 8800GT unless you want to wait for the newer parts to come out from ATI/Nvidia.

Otherwise, you believe they should perform the same? I read some benchmarks where the 8800GT kicked the 3870's butt.

Also, I read that the 3870 has higher quality to its rendering but slower frame rates, while the 8800GT has higher frame rates but lower quality. (In general)
Should I believe that?

Great, thanks for the help darkcloud. I think I will buy the 8800GT for now, I can always sell it later. I don't think I should have a problem with it.

I don't see the extra 4x Xfired 3870 being worth an additional $160.

In most games, they're going to be close, but the 8800GT is going to come out on top more often than not, especially if you want to use AF. Image quality is something purely based on personal opinion, and really I would suggest not believing someone who tells you one way or the other unless there's screenshots.

The 8800GT does perform better than the 3870. And like other ATI cards, they struggle with AA and AF.

So it may be a smarter idea to get a 8800GT or even a 8800GTS. Or, if you can wait, you can wait for the new 48xx cards to come out and see how they perform.
