Help me spend $500! - Page 2

i would actually wait on that 8800gt. when the gtx 280 comes out, you can expect some price drops on the lower models. if youre gonna spend 500 bucks, at spend it responsibly!

This would be a good setup:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 - $179.99 or
Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 - $131.99
DFI LANPARTY DK P35-T2RS - $129.99
Crucial Ballistix Tracer 2GB (2 x 1GB) - $59.99
XFX 8800GT -

If you stick with your current cpu, you would pretty much have to stick with your Mobo since that cpu is socket 939.

Even just getting an 8800GT and some new ram would be a pretty good improvement though.

Alright. Seems like the consensus is to upgrade the mobo, CPU and RAM. As far as the video card is concerned, is it really worth holding out on? Sure I can wait for price drops, but isn't that always a valid excuse?

I think he should go for E7200 instead, its ~$60 cheaper and easily overclockable to 3.6/3.8ghz on decent air cooling. But i agree with the ram 3200 kinda bit lame lol.

You pretty much have to upgrade your mobo since it is still only ddr1, which would mean you gotta upgrade the cpu to... which isnt always a bad thing ..

I would say just go for it all now, since there is always something new coming out just around the corner.. (gtx280.. then the new Intel CPU platform... ATI 4870... then what... it never ends)

well look at it this way. Is it really worth holding onto your cpu until the dual cores come down in price? they came down loads since mid 2007, and nowadays you can get decent dual core intel 3ghz+ for $130, and ram would only be another $70 max. I think your GC could wait out?

But even so you would still have another $300 left after those upgrades, $90 on a DS3L gigabyte gives you $210 to buy yourself a nice 8800GT 512mb

This is true, but in this case you have the new GPUs coming out in a little more than 2 weeks, not like Nehalem which is still months away and probably won't give a big boost to gaming.

My 2 cents
