OCing a hd 2600xt and have questions

Thread Starter
I'm new to this and have a HIS HD 2600XT 512 IceQ Turbo that i'm trying to squeeze a little extra out of. I've had a lot of trouble getting atitool to work until i tried a 27 version and the ati overdrive does nothing when i try to change settings just using it. I'm using the 8.5 ccc and drivers atm even though it seems my fps has dropped since i installed it.

I'm wondering what are acceptable temps for this card and why is this about all i can take it up with out it crashing? From some reviews i've read of 256 version of this card and other 2600xt's i should be able to push it more than i am.

Also what are the chances of me frying this card doing this?

Try Riva Tuner for OCing and ATI tool for testing. ATI cards can get in the 90C range but I would operate them that high.

I thought riva was for nvidia cards?

Ya, i was getting a little uneasy watching it climb to 71°C during the test. You could definitely feel a difference in the air coming out of the card.

Not sure what's going on here but when switch between stock and the OC profile it stays the same temp at idle 60°C and before it was at around 47°C with stock setting.

Also i noticed the fan doesn't sound like it's changing speeds when i change settings.

is the memory speed at 1000mhz effective or is it the ddr speed? cause whenever i bring mine up to 900 ddr, my card just crashes. I have the sapphire 2600xt and the max ive gotten it is 850 core and 850/1900 effective

It came from HIS with 830MHz Cc/ 1920MHz Mc so i'm thinking it should do better. Here's a link to the review where they got the 256 iceq to 931.5MHz Cc/ 2178MHz Mc and it was at 1600x1200, 0x AA, 8x AF. Not to mention i haven't even been able to come close to the 3dmark06 score of 4974 that is on the box. I am using the free version if that makes a difference.

I seen that i can add voltage to the card in the bios of my motherboard but i haven't messed with that since i'm clueless to what i'm doing and don't want to kill the card. Other than that the only thing i can think of is try some older drivers.

oh ,not sure if it makes a difference but i'm running the svid out to a 32" lcd as well as my monitor so i can keep tabs on temps when i'm doing game test.

So far i've only had one crash after about 4 hours of farcry on high settings, 2x aa, at 1280x1024 and everything runs smooth. Need to get some other games though.

Any tips that will get this working better and cooler?

best bet is to wait for one of the 48xx cards and ditch the 2600xt...no matter what, its still a low end card, i tried to push it to 1025/2050 and after about 2 seconds it generated artifacts and blue screened...

Well i tried riva tuner which did a little better on the core and mem. I'm now at 863cc/1165mc(warning sign at 1166) and if i try for 864 i get the orange screen even at 930mc(stock). Is bringing my mem clock up this high going to do much and would taking it lower than stock let me get the core up? Which of the 2 is better to have high?

One other thing i noticed is as soon as i start riva my temps go down. Is riva as acurate on temp monitoring as ccc or atitool?

Anything else i should look into?

edit: Noticed that in computer managment it shows i'm using driver version 8.401.0.0 and in riva it says 7.8 , is this normal? I've had a few drivers versions loaded and only uninstalled and installed the new ones but now have driver cleaner pro so i guess i'll run that next time.

What drivers are some of you with 2600xt's running? So far it seems i'm getting better results with the older drivers. Also is there any trickery that i'm not doing?

I updated my last post to the latest clocks... is this safe? I noticed a little yeild sign when i went one point over current memory clock.

edit:I forgot to switch to ati and scan. I had a few artifacts at 1165 but no errors so i brought the mem down untill i got 0 artifacts so it's now 1075 on mem.
