New Build, ALL Games Crash/Lockup

Thread Starter
Hello to Everyone...

Just found some time to attempt to game on my new PC.
Specs are as follows:
evga 780i mobo
evga 8800gt
intel q9450
ocz 2x2gb 1066
WD 74gb raptor
750-watt psu

Now, the problem is that whenever I try to play ANY game, it will play for about 1 - 5 minutes, then crash. Most of the time it's in-game and the screen just freezes. I have to hit ctrl+alt+del and terminate the process.

I have tried this on the following games: COD4, Crysis, & Mass Effect.
COD4 just completely failed to launch. Mass Effect, I was able to control the character, and talk to a few people, but it just locks right up. Crysis, just died during the intro (on the plane).

The first thing I thought of were the temps. I ran evga precision, and HWmonitor and the temps are well below max..so that can't be the issue.

I have gone through and made sure that all of the drivers are up-to-date. The BIOS on the mobo is also the latest version.

Running on Win XP Pro SP2 - All updates up until yesterday. Also, this is a fresh installation of windows. Only built this past Saturday.

Anybody have any insight as to why this would happen. Please let me know.

Thanks in advance!

Something could be overheating? Edit - Ok, well it could be your HDD, I'd just settle to get a new HDD maybe a Veloci-Raptor or something, are you sure you haven't got anything overclocked - auto overclocking options and what not?

And, use coretemp to check temps. See if your 8800GT is overheating during games, because you obviously can't judge the temps while you're at idle.

Nothing is overclocked, and temps during idle & load are well within the norm.

I have upgraded to the latest 175.16. Same with the nForce drivers... 9.64.

Everything else is up to date. At a total loss of what it could be. I ran ATItool to see if there is something wrong with the video card, and I got the following in the log.

I get the above throughout the rest of the test, until I stop it.

Could it be the video card? It's not overclocked.......

Do you have spare copies of each part in your system (i.e. crappy PCI-E card, crappy RAM, etc) so that you can check each part and isolate which part is the problem? RMA'ing broken parts is not uncommon, and with EVGA it will be incredibly easy as they have amazing customer service.

If I were to RMA the graphics card, do they ask that you send them the card first, then they send out replacement? Or do they send replacement first, then you send them your bad card?

Hey your artifacts are a big problem. In the end you will probably need to RMA this if it's at stock speed and artifacting. This is a giant problem.
Send them the card and they send a new one.

Yeah, the card is at stock speed. I kinda figured that might the issue here.. The ATItool log keeps recording that it's found 2 pixels that don't match. The 8800gt is the base version, so it's not even factory overclocked.
