Recording Question

As a guitarist, I am after max quality when recording. I current use the following set up:

Guitar (using normal guitar cable with them big jack plugs) > M Audio Black Box (Amp emulation & effects unit) > USB to PC > Ableton Live recording software.

As I am using USB, I can here a big deteriation in the sound quality and generally end up with a rough sound on the computer. I am aiming for a sound as near to what it sounds like through headphones or an amp as possible...

So heres the question.

I plan to get the Asus Xonar D2 sound card which has the S/PDIF in and out. It also comes with 4 TOSLink adapters to turn it into an optical line. Now can I use one of these TOSLink adapters on the S/PDIF output on my M Audio Black Box and go optical into my sound card?

The other way to do it would be with Coaxial cable & the RCA/ Regular S/PDIF connector on each end.

What would be easier/better?

No reason at all why SPDIF -> Xonar won't work.

Nice, cheers.

Optical using the TOSLink or just Coaxial with the SPDIF (RCA) Jacks?

Personally, I try to use as few adapters as possible when setting things up - just one less place where stuff could go awry. that one though is just personal preference - digital is digital regardless of transfer medium.

Is your computer isolated from all other outlets in the house? Or are you sharing it with other electronics? Try to Isolate yourself from the rest of the house.

Also if you can get an Active Direct box jack into it first and then into your Interface box. The better DI boxes out there have pads, and ground lift capability. They also have quality transformers performing the step down from Line to Mic level. And the Transformers will usually clean up white noise, and sometimes they are all you need to get rid of the dreaded 60 cycle ground loop buzz.

First verify that you can't solve the problem with what you already have. Verify that your little box is not trying to pickup your guitar as mic level. Does your Audio interface have a headphone jack, if so see if the guitar sounds good through there. If it does then move down the line towards the pc. It may be your pc itself. There is so much that can taint your audio on a computer. But if you are recording digitaly the recording should not pick up the noise that is being generated on the output. Also the filters that come with your little box may not sound exactly how you would expect them to.

Oh and get the cheapest digital coax you can find. If you plug it in and it works then it is just as good as a hundred dollar monster cable

Chipp said it above. Digital is Digital, and if the signal gets there your golden. Interference cant change the 1s and 0s to 2s and 3s

I don't get noise, just a rougher sound and I don't like the latency between playing and playback.

I am getting the Xonar anyhow so I figured I may as well cut out the USB.
