I would never go above 1.5v. The 45nm CPUs do have a short burn in (about a week) where they will need a .05-.1 increase in voltage for the same speed, but after that they seem to level off.

45nms have survived 1.8v+ on phase with no ill effects.
You think?

There is a difference between the Extreme Quads and the standard 45nm Duals....

Anything over 1.40v for a prolonged period of time WILL damage the chip.

You could get 4.2GHz on just 1.40V if you had a good batch, 4.3 at 1.45V, there's no need to run at 1.5+ unless you have phase change and just need to run 1 bench. Besides, its not like there's any noticeable performance increase in RL applications from 4.2 to 4.5 anyways.

Not that I would even run at 1.40V, 1.36 is my max and it still makes me uncomfortable, luckly i have a good batch and could pull 4.2 at 1.36

As did I, seriously man you can't run that much voltage through a 45nm chip. I'd say 1.45 is the absolute max for 24/7 use.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. My cousin in law is running a E8400 @ 4ghz with 1.44vcore. I tell him to lower the vcore or he will degrade his chip but he is like " Meh, it can take it" I say "wrong, you will have electron jumping causing degradation over time"...I give him a month before its fried.

2 weeks or 1 month is not a sufficient time line for me to buy into your "its OK" club.... check back with a 24/7 for 6 months at 1.45 on a 45nm chip and Ill believe...

It may die, or it can simply become non-OCable. It can even get unstable at stock clocks. Or then again it may stop degrading once you don't power it over 1.36V any more.

Once the insulator (between the current paths) is being affected it can continue to degrade, but there's no certainty that it will.

Good luck with your cpu.. I'd do what I did: Sell it and get another or a used Q6600 with a guaranteed good OC.
This is probably the best advice, sell it on ebay start over with a new one.

when I had my e8400 at 1.45 vcore and 4.6 it would be for benching but it was an everyday thing that lasted at least 2 hours a day everyday of the week for 4 months the rest was at 1.36 @ 4.3 so I figured a good month or so of use of straight 1.45 vcore but only cause I ran it the rest of the time lover. I can actually say I ran it at that for months though but IMO I wouldnt reccomend over 1.45 for 24/7 but it really depends on your temps

I am @ 1.40 for my qx and I know this other guy whose been running 1.42 24/7 since he got it when they first came out

Maybe it the mobo, memory I had bad memory once and first thing I did was blame the CPU

It is incredibly funny how most of you are spreading wrong information. Especially those that don't even have a 45nm chip.

It is pretty safe to run the chip above 1.4v on Vcore as long as you have sufficient cooling.

The max voltage spec that you guys keep referring to is the fsb voltage. This is not Vcore voltage. There is absolutely no reason to raise the fsb voltage to 1.4v as I am running 4.275 on 1.3v for the fsb voltage. I am however running 1.3875v on Vcore.

Do some research before you guys spew garbage on things you don't have a clue about.

http://www.anandtech.com/weblog/showpost.aspx?i=428

Edit: For those that will probably skim through the article, they are referring to the VTT Voltage, otherwise known as the FSB Voltage. This is NOT Vcore voltage.
