Possible GPU issue followed by system lock up

Hello all, sorry this is a bit long winded.

I started having some issues with my computer yesterday where some graphical glitches were visible in the game that I was playing and then my computer froze up. I restarted my computer and noticed some black lines through the Asus logo on the BIOS screen, then some white lines through the Windows XP start up screen, followed by my computer freezing again with the frozen screen of the game I was playing before the computer restart up on my screen instead of my normal wall paper.

Thinking that my GPU may have overheated, I felt the card, but it didn't feel any hotter than I remember it being when I first installed it. I also wasn't running GPUZ or any other monitoring tool, so I'm not sure what the temperatures were at the time.

Today, I fired the computer back up again and it loaded fine, so I thought temperature may have been the issue. Once I loaded the game up again (City of Heroes), it froze at the character load screen and the graphics got a bit funky. Unable to do anything else, I reset the computer.

When it started up again, I got the black lines through the Asus BIOS load screen again and then my desk top wallpaper had pink and white pixels all over the place. Again, the computer froze.

After a few restarts, I was able to get the Windows error report, which told me that there was a graphics card driver issue and I should either update my drivers or turn down my Hardware Acceleration. I tried the Hardware Acceleration, but it didn't help.

I don't understand why all the sudden there would be a driver issue that would require them to be updated. I haven't changed anything on my computer in a long time now unless a file in my GPU drivers is corrupt. My problem is that I can't get my system to do anything long enough to reinstall the drivers before the whole thing locks up.

Could it be that the drivers need to be reinstalled or do you think that the card is just failing? Any advice or input you all could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I was able to uninstall the Nvidia drivers, run Driver Cleaner and then install new updated drivers and still the same thing is happening.

Would this be an indication that the actual card itself is going bad?

Ya the card is going bad, if it was only a driver issue, you wouldn't be artifacting (black lines, weird graphics) when starting up your PC at the POST screen and Asus logo.

This is what I feared and thought myself. I already ordered a new graphics card, so when that comes in it'll be really easy to determine if my current card is beginning to fail.

Well that's kind of a bummer. In all my years of computers, this is only my second piece of hardware that has ever failed (has this card for a little over a year), the first being a hard drive I had for over 5 years.

Oh well, I guess I was due.
