My friend who works at the apple store is selling me his 24" Imac 3.06ghz, 2gb ram, 500gb hd, 8800gs 512 for only $1500 and I will be picking it up on friday!

Congrats, that's exciting! Hmm...I'd say...uh...check your email?

I'm not too experience with Mac's, so I have nothing mac-specific to suggest. Otherwise, I say get some multi-boot action going on, perhaps ubuntu? I would say windows, but I don't want to get flamed...

$1500?! Ugh. You could have a much better PC for that much. This is one reason why I'm sticking only to Mac notebooks. The MacBooks aren't too much more than their PC counterparts, but the iMac and Mac Pro are just way to expensive. I'd rather have a tower with much better components than mediocre components in an all-in-one. But that's just me.

A pre-built 3.0GHz C2D machine with a decent video card AND a 24" monitor--that would be around $1500 after including an OS. Lowest priced 24" monitor I can find on newegg is $340 (to match the mac's monitor quality, it'll probably be somewhere around $500 for the monitor)--including comparable components to build what the mac has to offer, and you're just around $1500. So it's not a bad deal at all.

Also, way to unnecessarily kill the OP's excitement dude...

Yeah I was under that same impression. I'll buy that iMac from you in a couple of months for $1000 to pay for your rent then, if you want.

In the meantime, I think you should do some video editing, listen to iTunes, upload songs to your iPod, surf on Safari, and write a blog on OCN about how much you miss tinkering inside your computer, all on your new 24" iMac!!!

I'm just tugging your chain, though, I think iMac's are very nice. My wife still asks me why I didn't just get one of those instead of the desktop I'm on now. I explained to her that it's just a laptop on a stand, without the battery and portability. So she got an XPS M1330 instead because she likes to compute in her favorite chair.
