q6600 all 4 cores run at below 5% on large file copy

Hi,

I am definitely new to overclocking but I do have a pretty good understanding of computer components and theory.

I am a bit lost to find how to fix this problem:

When outlook cloese I configured it to back up its contents. It is a huge file (2.5 gigs) but that withstanding, when I look at what my Q6600 is doing while taking 10 minutes to back up the file, it is running at 3to5% the entire time with not even any large spikes of activity. Any thoughts?

I am running the chip at fsb 1385 and 3117 MHz, 346 x9. My average cpu temp is 28C.
1.21 volts to the chip.

All drive are defragged and 7200 speed. Sata enabled with 32 bit transfer. All power settings are set so that the CPU does not go into a power saving mode. I have not done anything to the RAM (4 (1) gig sticks). My bios is the most recent.

Thank you for any thoughts and I iknow it could be a ton of factors.
Mike

Because copying files=HDD activity not CPU.

Thanks for your help. The 5 drives are not in any RAID array/configuration. All independent. I know that copying to hard drives takes time, but it just seems like my Q6600 is not really being used across the board, even when editing video, pictures and such. I feel like it is getting wasted even though it is overclocked and not sure what is up.

I brought up the copy issue because sometimes it copies in 3 minutes vice 10 and with the same things open during copy.

Thanks again for your quick help.

Cheers,
Mike

Try some video encoding using Mediacoder , takes all 4 cores up to 80%

Note that the program need to support quad cores or it wont use all the 4 cores.

also if you press ctrl+alt+del and enter task mngr once any of your encoding software is open you can go int processes>select program>set affinity and set it to run on any of the 4 cores....

being 1&2 are my warmest i set encoding to 3&4 and you will see the activity jump on those cores once encoding starts..

Plus it frees up the other cores to do what ever else you want without even noticing anything running in backround..

only downside is you have to do this each time you re open the program..

windows utilizes all 4 cores
