The GTX260 will definitely out perform the ultra.
Does anybody have links to these new cards? I'm surfing ATI's website but can't find anything.

Tom's did a bench on both of the cards. The GX2 beat the Ultra until AA and AF was enabled. Than the Ultra actually beat the GX2 by a few FPS. I'm looking for it now and will post it once I find it again.

How would the ATI HD 4870 GDDR5 hold up against the 8800 Ultra and 9800 GX2?

The price range on the GTX 260 is nice, I might pick me up a couple.
from initial reports, better.

the question you have to ask yourself is if you want an SLI or crossfire capable motherboard. That will determine your video card choice. If you go SLI, you can buy mid priced card now and add a second a few months down the road. With Crossfire, the same applies.

If you go for the most expensive single card solution, you pay more now and are limited to that card but with the right motherboard you can get better performance in the long run with some careful advance planning with a pair of inexpensive cards that combined will give better performance.

I will be getting a crossfire or sli ready motherboard, depending on which gpu I go with.

I would probably go with either the ATI HD 4870 or the GTX 260.

I can always upgrade to sli or crossfire later, expecially with the nice pricetag on the 4870.

The GTX 280 is basically the geforce 9900 GTX correct?

So the 4870 and the GTX 260 will both outperform the 8800 Ultra and 9800 GX2?

Definitely!

Would two 4870's in crossfire be the same as one 4870 X2?

I don't want to wait until July/August for the 4870 X2 to come out. (I'm pretty impatient I've been researching computers for 3 months now.)
