The difference between the 4870 and the 4850 is the clock speeds, the memory amount and type (512mb gddr5 for the 4870 and 256mb gddr3 for the 4850).

Im guessing ATI will test the cores in the lab and bin them according to what speeds they can achieve. The faster achieving cores will be binned as 4870 cores and the slow performing ones binned as 4850 cores. Unless of course they are made entirly seperatly from each other due to the different memory types (someone clarify this?).

The release date for the 4870 and 4850 is June 23rd I believe, with the 4870x2 coming out in august.
O RLY? lol I'm wrong sorry

we already know that they both have 800 sps, but the core and the mem is clocked lower for the 4850. does that mean that ocing a 4850 saves you $100+ over a 4870?

800 SPs? RV770(The core that's used in all three cards) has 480 SPs. The difference between the 50 and the 70 are memory type and core speed. The 4870x2 is two 70 cores on one PCB with GDDR5. The 4850x2(if it comes) would be two 50 cores on one PCB with GDDR3.

Who the hell thought of this 800sp BS? RV770 isn't that much different from 670. They increased the groups is all. RV760 had 64 groups of 5(4+1) SPs(320 total). RV770 has 96 groups of 5(4+1) for 480 total.

If you still haven't caught on, the HD4870x2 will have 2x96x(4+1) SPs, that's 960 for those who can't count.

Basically If this is true the shader:TMU ratio would have increased from 1:4 (64:16) to 1:5 (160:32). And even if the shader:TMU ratio stayed the same RV770 would still have 640 Steam processors.
