HIS 3870 IceQ3 problem

Thread Starter
Well, just put together my new rig. And playing source games, maxxed out at 1440x900 no prob (150+fps consistently. Video stress test put it at 180fps average).

But, I go to play BF2, I throw it on 1440x900, and now and then my screen will flick to black, and Ill get a VPU Recover screen. Now, I doubt BF2 can be harder on my card then Source...And, using CPUID my GPU temps never exceeded 55C.

Any thoughts?

BTW, see if you can turn off the VPU recover feature in CCC. That might fix it.

Im on 32bit XP. And, yes, the copy is legit. I am running 4gb of ram, so it may be throwing a fit because 32bit windows only recognized 3.5gb.

The odd thing is, after i exit the VPU Recover screen, the game doesnt crash, I just maximize and keep playin.

It's normal for the game to keep on going after a recover. Newest drivers from ATI? The recovery kicks in when windows dont get any communication from the GPU within 3-5sec. Might wanna try an older driver if ure currently using the latest.

I just downloaded and installed the latest ATi/AMD drivers (Cat 8.5) and it still happened. I played some more source engine games, all maxed, and had no problems what-so-ever.

Should I try the Omega drivers, or is it more then likely just a problem with BF2? Would it be fine if I just turned off VPU Recover? Or will that make the game freeze when it'd normally have the recover kick in?

If you read the reviews at newegg, there's a LOT of people that complain about the HIS Iceq3 3870 cards not being stable at those speeds.

I would say try to underclock it a little bit to see if that fixes the problem. If it does, you need to RMA. If it doesn't, I would still RMA.

Ye, try to put them down to stock ati (777 / 1125)
And the game will freeze ye, but you can always try it out.
