Ok So I have $1000 USD to spend on a computer. I have made a list but its over bugdet a little.

Heres the List:

NZXT TEMPEST - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811146047 ($109.99)

DFI LAPARTY DK P35 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813136043 ($129.99)

Q6600 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115018 ($199.99)

XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835233003 ($36.99)

G.SKILL 4GB (2x 2GB) DDR2 1000 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231145 ($84.99)

EVGA 8800GT - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130318 ($169.99)

LITE-ON DVD Burner - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106263 ($21.99)

PC Power & Cooling 610W - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817703005 ($109.99)

Seagate 250GB 32MB Cache -http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148309 ($79.99)

Tuniq TX-2 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835154003 ($3.79)

Vista Home Premium 64-Bit - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116488 ($99.99)

Total - $1046.69 BEFORE Shipping ($1202.68 After Shipping)

I am over $202.68…I wish I could cough up more but I cant…

I live in alaska and it’s the Case that is costing SO much to ship here…it alone adds $80 of shipping…I need help tweaking my computer...I want to lower the price but not lose ANY performance or very little.

Here are some things I was thinking of:

PSU is 109.99 Maybe there is a PSU out there that is cheaper but still VERY good.
4GB is only 84.99 while good 2GB is 65$...idk about this one…
32 bit and 64 bit are the same price = \\

I just don’t know what to do, please help.

Any tweaks/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Do you have any recyclable parts (i.e. HDD's or Optical Drives)? Maybe friends that would give you one to use?

You could also get a cheaper case, or perhpas find a used "beige box" to use temporarily. I know it ain't pretty, but you will still have the hardware and that is what counts.

Getting 2GB of RAM for now would save you the money, but you mentioned the price-point and I am inclined to agree with you.

If you could live with stock cooling, you could do just that until you save enough to get an aftermarket cooler... occasionally I see othere peeps selling good ones here on OCN.

My suggestion (probably still a bit over budget, but closer):
  • COOLER MASTER RC-690-KKN1-GP Black SECC/ ABS ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail $84.99
  • DFI BloodIron P35-T2RL LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail $114.99
  • EVGA 512-P3-N801-AR GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail $169.99
  • CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX 550W ATX12V V2.2 Power Supply - Retail $99.99
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 Wolfdale 2.53GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80571E7200 - Retail $131.99
  • G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1000 (PC2 8000) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8000CL5D-4GBPQ - Retail $84.99
  • Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500AAKS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM $59.99
  • LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner Black SATA Model iHAS120-04 - OEM $23.99
  • Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit English for System Builders 1pk DSP OEI DVD - OEM $99.99
  • XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler $36.99
Total: $907.90

Comments:
  1. I assume it's a gaming rig. If so, no need for the Quad. The E7200 is a nice chip and should overclock quite well.
  2. Case: up to you, but this is where I would save. See if you can find anything decent locally for about $75, since this is a major hit on the shipping costs.
  3. Thermal paste: use whatever comes with the Xigmatek. The Tuniq stuff isn't much better.
  4. PSU: the 550W Corsair is powerful enough and really good quality (as good, if not better than the PC P&C).
  5. Optical: another item you should look for locally.

@ Penicilyn: are you seriously suggesting a 430W PSU of unknown quality? (The Earthwatts used to be decent when they were Seasonic based, however, Antec changed OEM, and now it's unsure what their quality is. Not recommended at the moment, and 430W is probably pushing it with this rig)

and a balanced build for gaming and normal usage

one small question for the HDT heatsink though... what sort of TIM application technique to use? since there's a groove in between the heat pipe and aluminium base (or do you just apply thin layer of TIM the direct contact heatpipes)
