I dont know what program to run!?!

Thread Starter
I am trying to find a reliable program that will give me accurate temperature readings for my CPU, Im running vista 64 and none of the programs seems to work except for speedfan. I dont think its giving me accurate temps though because its in a room thats next to freezing and its right under the vent and im not even overclocked yet and its reading idle temps at around 48 to 51C. If anybody could give me advice or answers I would greatly appreciate it, Thank you!

Have you tried Coretemp http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ or RealTemp http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/SysInfo/Real_Temp/ yet?

You could also try Everest, although this is only a trial version http://www.download.com/Everest-Ulti...-10499291.html

I got core temp and it works, but its still showing me higher temps! I heard somewhere that for some reason it will show a higher temp by 10 degrees and to change a setting to fix it do you know anything about that?

Hey raginggumby, I'm not sure I can help you. I just googled a bunch of stuff on the q9300 and a lot of people seem to be having trouble reading temperatures accurately, a lot of them have it reading (on multiple programs) 45 - 51 C on idle, even though the heat sink is cool when they touch it. One person emailed Intel, and got a reply back saying as long as it didn't go over 80 C, it's fine, but the general consensus from the threads I read on google seem to indicate that there's a problem reading the temps correctly.

Ah, here's a little more informative of a post that I found off of tomshardware.com.

"A significant percentage of 45 nanometer processors are being reported with defective DTS sensors, which appear as unresponsive Core temperatures at lower Scale. Offsets between Cores exceeding 10c are also being reported. Sensors can be tested using Real Temp 2.5 - http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/ - Processors with defective sensors should be RMA`d. This applies to E7000, E8000, Q9000 and QX9000 series processors"

It could be that your temp sensors are not working correctly. They state that to test it, d/l real temp and run it, at the bottom left, click on "Test sensors". When the 4 numbers pop up, look for the greatest difference between them. According to realtemp, a difference greater than 3 is a warning sign.

There does seem to be a general problem with the built in temperature sensors on the 45nm processors such that they do not give out acurate readings. From what I can tell coretemp gives off readings from 10-20 degrees C higher than what it is. If you have any of the temperature probes that you can place around your case, try placing one touching your core (or use a small thermometer) to find the actual temp and work from there.

If you can determine the actual error then using core temp is best. On cpu's without such a problem (ie Q6600) it reports temps excellently.

thanks guys that really helps me out a lot rep to both of you! Yeah I have a second rig and it has the Q6600 in it and it runs at about 31C at idle which is what I was hoping for this one. Anyway I bought a Vendetta2 and 2 after market fans to "push pull" it and im going to reseat it tonight so ill see if i can get a sensor on it and find out what its really running at so i can finally start OC'ing the beast! Anyway thanks again for the help its much appreciated!

Realtemp is the most accurate for 45nm CPU's (E8xxx series, Q9xxx series).
Coretemp is most accurate for 65nm CPU's (any dual\\quad core not mentioned above).
