4870 X2 or GTX 280? - Page 2

I would expect that the 280 would be better, GX2 cards are never as good in real life as they seem on paper.

if the 4870x2 performs more than 30% better, I'd go for it, otherwise, I would stick to a single card solution.

EDIT: Actually, I think I'll wait for the 9740X2...

Yeah thats a good idea, wait for all of them to be released. I think thats what I'll do.

So I'm gonna build my computer to run the new cards, but I need a cheap, but good card to put in there until fall.

Any suggestions? I was thinking a single 3870 512MB? Maybe an nvidia 8800 GTS G92? Although the 8800 is a bit more expensive than the 3870.

3870 prices are dropping - best buy has begun sales of them for 129.99 - plus a single 3870 can give you 14K in 3dmark06, later on in life I'm sure you'll be able to crossfire it with the 4870 or the futuristic 9740.

Well if you're a gamer then you'll want a 8800GTS G92. That'll tie you over very well until the fall (or whenever the release date of the 4870X2 is).

I was planning on selling whatever card I get now after we see some real world benching of the GTX 280 against the 4870 X2.

Futuristic 9740? Are you talking about the 4870 X2 due in the fall?

I would get the 8800 GTS G92 but I still have yet to see it drop from the $250 range.

Amen.

If going by bang for buck, it looks like ATI may have Nvidia beaten... but this is just speculation, as nothing is really known until there's an 'add to cart' button next to the cards.

::Wishes ATI would put out some capable workstation cards::
