Do I need more juice?

post #1 of 16

Right now I'm running a Mushkin 580W quad-rail PSU. I did an online program to determine how much power my system is sucking up. It said 511W. I have been having trouble with my video card randomly running in x1 rather than x16. Could a more powerful PSU help this?

It could, yes. Which drivers are you using, and did it ever run in 16x? Also, see if there is a bios update for your board.

Nope your psu is more than enough..you could even throw another 8800gt in there and run it comfortably..those online psu calculators are rubbish, id estimate your rig running 400-450 watt at load max..you psu is fine..I remember the DDR ram Mushkin made and they made some nice stuff, from that id assume their psus are decent.

I have the newest BIOS F3n. It runs in x16 most of the time. But sometimes it randomly goes into x1. I was playing GOW earlier and after 5 minutes my frame rates dropped by half, I backed out of the game checked GPU-Z and it said

PCI-E 2.0 x16 @ x1

After a couple reboots it went back to x16. Its the weirdest thing.

Yeah its a good PSU. I have had no issues with it. Mushkin makes quality stuff. I know 580W is kinda low compared to what a lot of people run.

Lol..dont know about what people run..look at your rig and ask yourself if the psu is capable of running it with ease..Alot of people here really overkill with the psu.

I just read that your board and the Asus P5B Deluxe has a (quote) "lame bug, the PCI-e speed drops to 1x. With it, even a 9800GX2 lags."

Try this out: (this is for the Asus board, but maybe the same options will work for yours)

In NB :
PEG Force 1x => Disable
PEG Link Mode => Auto (if you change this to Normal it'll go 1x)
Asus C.G.I => Disable

In SB:
PCIEX16_2/PCIEX1_1 Force => X4Mode (fast)

My rig sucks up a lot more juice than yours and I'm running it with a 600W GameXstream OCZ
Any issues you're having is either due to instability from clock speeds or a screwup in your BIOS

Your PSU should be plenty for your system. You don't need anywhere near 511W like that calculator says. It's probably closer to 250W. But that Mushkin isn't a what I consider a quality PSU. Here's a review: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...ly-review.html. It will do what it says on the label but voltage regulation and ripple suppression aren't exactly class leading. I'm not a fan of the Topower built Mushkins at all. The 550 didn't do so well either: http://jonnyguru.com/modules.php?nam...=Story&reid=20

edit: I'm not saying to get rid of it, just next time you upgrade think about getting something a little better if you can afford it.

Can you give me a link to where you read that? Unfortunately my BIOS doesn't really have those options
