Best chipset/Motherboard for oc E8400

Thread Starter
Hi,

I have a EVGA 680i SLI AR version mobo at the moment. I want to upgrade my CPU from a E6600 to a E8400, why? I recently bought a 9800GTX and my current CPU is bottlenecking my GPU.

I could send my 680i back for a AR > A1 swap for compability reasons.
But maybe it's a better option to sell the board and buy a P35 board = more stable and cheaper. I don't need SLI, because there are more problems with it then improvements.

What to do? Keep my 680i and swap it or buy the Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R (rev. 2.1) or the DFI LANPARTY DK P35-T2RS.

What will be the best option for overclocking a E8400 to +/- 4.00Ghz

the 680i will overclock the E8400 just fine but you will be limited. i would get a P35 chipset board if your not going SLI. which brings the question, why did you even get a nvidia chipset if your not going SLI.

EDIT. i got 4.45ghz on my old 680i with alot of vcore though.

Originally, i had SLI in mind. But i dont need it with my 32" LCD with max 1366x768 resolution. now i know it's not worth it and i can always go for 9800GX2.

edit: what about Foxconn Mars, a bit more expensive though.

I would go with the DFI out of those two. The new P45 boards are out, I would wait a bit and see how those work out in overclocking. The Biostar P45 looks promising at the moment.

Foxconn Mars would be the board to get. 2 people here have gotten their CPUs above 600FSB. Here's one with the E8400.

i'm currently looking at the biostar P45, people have gotten to 612 FSB with E8500s.

The Foxconn has some outstanding issues, so be wary with it.

The ABIT IX38 Quad GT looks decent...

Otherwise, go with Asus. Their P5Q lineup is fantastic...I hear.

Sorry i couldn't contribute more specifics.

The 7series chipsets are great on paper, but in reality it's like SLI: more problems than benefits.

So, Gigabyte GA-EP35-DSR3R Rev.2.1 still seems to be the best choiche. They're cheap, stable and it's a mature board with mature drivers.

What about cooling on this board, it seems the mosfet are not cooled/covered by a heatsink. should i buy small mosfet heatsinks.

My purpose with this board is Overclock the hell out off it with a E8400 on air.
