How to: Remove lag spikes and increase frame rates in STEAM

I've have a lot of problems because of this. Whenever there was an update, something would reset in steam that would give me lag spikes and game chokes, even though another system equivalent to mine was running perfectly smooth during gameplay.
There's only one solution to this that I know of.

Open steam like so, and select the "Settings" tab.

Then choose the "Internet" Tab as shown

Go down to the "Internet Connection speed menu. if it's set at anything lower than "LAN/T1>1M", then you've most likely found the source of your problem.

Change whatever it was on to LAN/T1>1M. You're all set! Join a fast server and let me know how your FPS rates increased

I've noticed that Steam ignores what you input during installation, forcing you to do this post-installation setting. They'll fix it eventually, but anyhow, good faq.

What about the dsl 768k? Wouldn't that be appropriate for more users than lan/t1?

by setting it to 56k or anything lower than lan/t1, steam tries to compress server information to send it faster to your computer, but then your computer has to uncompress the files. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this would cause something called a "choke".
