[Publish.it] 4850/4870 vs 9800GTX/9800 GX2

Thread Starter
Another informative graph....but this one looks spot on to me. Interestingly the 4870 isn't that much better than a 3870 X2.

Although for the record i get around 9k or so with a single stock GX2 on the performance preset with a 3Ghz Quad, Asus Striker II 780i, 4GB Reapers 4-3-3-15. So not sure what the test system was here.

Benchmark Comparion

If these are accurate, then I see absolutely no reason to buy a 4870 when you can just grab a 4850 and have an unnoticeable difference in frames.

Hopefully we'll see some more real-world benchmarks in the coming days, with the 4850 losing by ~20% in one game, and winning by ~50 in two others. It's hard to tell the cards real performance. Looks like the 4870 is the same way, so who knows.

Sigh.

Anyway, I have no reason to believe these are real when the HD4850 ones from OCW posted actually have pics.

somethings fishy about the the 4870 in that chart, i thought the 4870 was supposed to have 1gb of memory, and they didnt even list frequencies for the card.... its almost like the oc'd the 4850 to get an idea of the 4870 if u ask me...

I was just thinking similar along the lines of this because its only about 3 or 4 frames difference and that doesnt sound right. If that be the case then it seems like its a rehash of the x1900xt and the xtx...not much performance difference but a higher premium.

The 4870 they are using is the GDDR3 version, not the GDDR5.

Huzzah! I bet the 4870 will be maybe 10% slower than the 9800gx2 when all is said and done, because the only game where it did significantly worse than the GX2 was lost planet, which is a game nvidia pretty much made. That and they are using pre-release drivers

Nice work AMD
