Official 8800GT Max Safe Temp?

Thread Starter
Hi all
What is the maximum temperature for safe long term operation of the 8800GT (g92) graphic card?
Here are a partial list of somewhat bewildering anwsers i been getting.
XFX ignore my email
Nvidia rep quouted 65-70C underload
BFG tech quoted at first 100C. then after some gentle pounding 90C is where artifacts and failer starts to apear. But assures me that 80C is good for long term operation and claims these cards idle anywhere from 40C to 60C
EVGA has said that 110C the max and the card will shutdown at 125C
oh last but not least, in linux shutdown temp is set to 100C (ovbiously to protect against damage)

My question is ***. Why is the anwser all over the map.
And seriously why is the thermal spec a trade secret? (given only to card designers) be more like intel plz

personally i got good air flow and my load temp is 76C max with fan at 100 DC
76 is pretty high since ambient now is like 25C and case temp is 40C b/c of 4 strip of 8500 ddr2 ram.
if you got some magic numbers do post here
Oh if you got connection inside nvidia lets see the thermal and voltage spec : )

all the nVidia cards ive owned had a thermal shutdown at 125C.
now obviously running at 120 for 24/7 is going to lower the life, but it can still "run" up to 125C.

Below 90C is nominal. Anything above it... check airflow, HS mounting, or get RMA. It is still safe... just not normal.

Above 110C, the card should throttle to reduce heat.

At 125-130C, the card should shutdown.
Once again...

Well my card artifacts above 80c, so its just dependent on the card you get. Thats why I purchased a aftermarket cooler.

105 degrees is safe for short periods of time but I'm pretty dang sure it's not suitable for 24/7
