Should I switch?...

Thread Starter
Ok, so, I just built my new rig. And, after a day I find my HIS HD3870 Turbo is, well, more unstable then...well, its real unstable.

So, I am going back to Tigerdirect tomorrow, and returning it, and I was wondering, should I make the switch to an 8800?

I am not planning to run Crossfire or SLI soon, as well, my motherboard is Crossfire ready, since I was planning to run an ATi card. Im just wondering, I dont plan on any huge overclocking, and from all the sources Ive looked at the 8800's are the better card. But, one thing I was curious of, is are the 8800's HDMI ready? One of the real nice features I like about the Radeon HD's is they are HDMI ready. As I have a Sony Bravia 1080p HDtv, that I would like to hook my pc up to. I have seen that the 8800's are all HD and 1080p (Unless I am mistaken) ready, but only few are HDMI ready, and that mostly only the 9600 and 9800's are HDMI.

So, my question is, is for my uses (mostly just gaming) and price point, should I stick with an 3870, and just get a different version? I am not too happy with the experience I had with my HIS card, and am reluctant to get another after the other reviews Ive seen of them. I was thinking about the Visiontek HD3870 because it has similar out of the box clock speeds as the HIS, and seems to be more reliable as well.

don't worry about the card being HDMI ready or not. (unless u want audio signal with it).

HDMI and DVI are the same thing except HDMI also carries an audio signal. You can get DVI/HDMI adapters or you can do what i did and get one of these.

and yes i love my 8800GT not the stock cooling on it tho

Anyone?...The main thing holding me back from just getting another HD3870 without thinking about it is from what I understand, the HIS version is already pretty much maxed out as far as the 3870's can go, and normal 8800GTS's can beat it?

Or, for all normal things, the two cards equal as you can get?

yes, a normal 8800gts, as long it is the G92 512mb or 1gb verison, will beat ANY 3870 (except the X2)

however, 2x3870 will beat 1x 8800gts

Seems like I am leaning towards the 8800GTS now.

I don't plan to upgrade soon, so would it be a good idea to get the 8800GTS since its the fastest in my price range, and will play anything I can throw at it with no problem for some time to come?

Or, just get the 3870, then down the line I can do a Crossfire with another, or maybe a faster ATi chip then?

But, Im just thinking...By that time, would it just be cheaper to get a new, faster single card?

Lol, wow, I really am struggling with this decision haha

8800GTS or wait till next week and see what the 4850 pans out to be.

I would wait for the 4850, but, I doubt it will be in my price range. My price range right now is $220 and under. And even $220 is pushin' it. And I have a feeling the next gen ATi cards will be priced above their current ones. If I could afford cards that expensive, I would've gotten a 3870x2 and been done with it.
