Are you addicted to Video Games? – The Nera Perspective

Quote:
I think that this newly formed 'Video Game Addiction' comes under the same category as several other 'addictions' that have popped up over recent years, like shopping addictions, sex addictions, and drinking milk from the carton addictions.
Oh i believe that only drugs can make ppl really addicted, what video game to me is my love. However, there are actully more and more saying hold "addiction" towards video game specially after MMO came out.

you cant claim its just drugs that are adictive as some drugs have no chemical addiction but a psycological addiction to that drug can made.

I was addicted to cough"chemicals" cough. That why I work for a pharmacutical now.

For games I was hooked with BF2142. Every time I had was sucked up to this game. Lucky I went to a support group and got help.

I thought I was addicted to WoW, but because I just randomly quit and wasn't living with my mom or anything, I know I wasn't.

"but simply a bad habit that can be easily remedied with willpower and self-discipline."

The problem with that is, my grandmother who smoked for most of her life just up and quit one day, hasn't smoked since. No one debates cigarette smoking to be an addiction but as she says, you have to want to quit in order to be successful. So maybe it is possible that these things are indeed addictions? I mean, people with 6 figures in credit card debt who still feel the need to go shop for shoes or turn into a complete basket case, are they not addicted? Sure we're 'in control' and have free will, but couldn't the same be said about a schizophrenic?

I don't think it's the same as being hooked on pizza and wings (mmmm). And is not the same as say spending a lot of hours doing something you enjoy. An addiction is only something that ends up consuming you, and you couldn't function at all without it. I don't think raiding with your guild on WoW 3 days a week qualifies as an addiction, it's only when you start calling into work regularly, skipping class, and ignoring friends/family that it becomes a problem.

Just my .02

Oh and, I find it easy to get hooked on MMO's because they don't ever really end! Always more to do. Well, that may just be Farmcraft, always something to farm.

This thread made me ask the question: What is addiction?

I see a few people are sharing their personal spin on addiction. According to Merriam Webster an addiction is a compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance (In context: habit-forming game) characterized by tolerance and well-defined psychological symptoms upon withdrawal; and persistent compulsive use of a substance (game) known to the user to be harmful.

I just thought you might be aided by the real definition of the term "addiction" when asking yourself "Am I addicted to video games?"

---

I play a lot of video games, but other than a few sleepless nights, I find that I can stop when I want or need to, don't suffer from withdrawal (But do suffer from cravings to be at home on my computer when away for long periods, or I might say that I will savor the moment I am able to really relax and spend some time by myself at home on my computer) when separated, and I tend to mindfully interject breaks and do exercise to prevent myself from becoming "unhealthy" from sitting here for longs periods (I'm not perfect)...

/me is not addicted?
