Are you "addicted" to Video Games? - Page 5

Hmm, seems like the news stories are always trying to find the bad side of things. More than a million players, and they just happen to pick out the addicts.
I played a few hours on the free trial, and then quit. Didn't seem interesting to me.

As I read through this thread, I couldn't help but think of the millions or druggies and alcoholics that would say the same thing ya'll were saying. "No I'm not addicted, I just have nothing better to do", " I only drink with my friends, and I'm just a social person.", and my all time fav, that I have heard WAY too many times "I can quit at any time, I just have no reason to."

I will admit, I used to play some games all day and night, no matter what anyone tried to tell me. In fact I almost lost my fiance to my "problem". For me I don't know for sure if it was the games I was playing, the people I was playing them with, or the website I was playing them on that I was addicted to. Honestly at that time, I believe it was the ppl I was playing against that I was addicted to. I turned to Crysis, Bioshock, and CoD4. I had beaten all 3 of these games in less than a week, does that make me addicted?

My problem that I know I have, even as a chick, is the fact that when I start a game that I really like, I don't want to stop until I have beaten it. I start to push myself to stay awake,"only 5 more minutes" but then look at the clock and a few hours have gone by. Since I have beaten those 3 games, I have pretty much stopped playing NON stop.

I am disabled, so I have alot of limitations as to what I CAN do, so yes I do spend alot of my time at my computer. It's not always that I want to, or need to, but I do. T.V. just gets boring, and since I have a chronic pain disorder in both my legs, I can't just go out and walk around town or go to the park because I get bored and I just have time to think about the pain. I turn to video games to keep my mind busy. I love playing CoD4 multi player, even though I sometimes suck at it, every night, or dang near it. Does that make me an addict? If so, oh well. If not then good. I don't really care. I look at it that I can be addicted to a game, or the TV, and lets face it, watching tv u don't have to think any at all, while playing a game, you do.(even if not much) I am sure that alot of you will argue with the way I think, but I don't care. At least I'm addicted to gaming rather than drugs or alcohol. I still do what I HAVE to do, even if it takes me longer to do it than it takes most.

OK so to end this, longer than expected response, I will ask you this, Am I an addict, and if I am, Why does it really matter?

The average American spends 20-30 hours in front of the TV every week. I don't watch that much at all so I compensate with gaming, I don't see the problem at all.

The point at which you start neglecting social friendships and stuff as you seem to have done at one point is the time when you should probably re-prioritize.

Well, I always choose to hang out with friends, or get hammered over gaming. Gaming is what I do in my spare time, and right now, I have A LOT of spare time. Internet, and gaming substitutes television for me...I probably watch no more than 2 hours of TV a week. Seriously.

I had realized that right before it was too late. Since that point, I have stopped playing games on online sites like that for that reason. I now only play either when my fiance is not home, or when he is playing as well. I only added that bit of info to prove that it is possible to be "addicted" to a game. I also have a buddy that was kind of like that with WoW. He was fired from his job because he refused to miss WoW time. He would go days off just a couple hours sleep because he was so into the game. I have never gotten into WoW personally, but I know what it's like to feel like the world is gonna end if ya go too long without playing your fav games... Even if that sounds sad or makes me sound immature I believe that it is 100% possible to be honestly addicted to a game or gaming in general. Sure it is slightly differant than being addicted to a drug or alcohol, but at the same time every drug addict or alcoholic is also differant with their addiction. When ya get to the point that I was at, and even if you don't think you have a problem, when all you "want" to do is play games and everything else just seems to get it the way of that, you are addicted. I am not talking about people who don't want to work or go to school because gaming sounds more fun, I'm talking the people who DON'T go.

I had once found a video on youtube that was a kid freaking out and screaming and crying just because his parents told him he had to stop playing his game, and when I say kid it was more like a teen acting as a 4 y/o. That video was kind of what made me give up on games for a while. Now like I said, I only play em when I have nothing to do, or with my fiance, oh yeah and durring breaks of cleaning.I don't have a problem with people who watch alot of t.v. but its just not for me. When I am really upset with something I have learned that it helps me to sit down and shoot up a bunch of people in a game.

Yeah seriously, if they're going to call gaming an addiction, they should call TV one too. Aren't Americans already stereotypically seen as fat men drinking beers on a couch watching TV all day?
Maybe I just hang out with those strange friends of mine for too long.
