E8500 and...?

Thread Starter
I've done a couple of searches on these forums and I'm still completely indecisive, hoping someone could help a forum newb with another "what motherboard should I get" question heh.

I'm looking to put together a gaming rig that'll last me for awhile. After a lot of reading, I decided on an E8500 which I'll be overclocking to around 4.0 GHz to begin with (eventually I'll be pushing beyond that).

I haven't decided whether I want to run SLI or not yet, but I've heard that running 2x 8800 GT will give me better performance than a single 9800 GTX.

What are some good options for motherboards with the above in mind, budget is probably $150-250. Wouldn't mind getting some suggestions for both non-SLI and SLI capable boards. Obviously spending less is better but I don't want to sacrifice a lot of performance.

Thanks in advance.

Evga 780i board if you want to SLI.
But I wouldn't bother with the E8500, and just get a E8400.
The 9x multi is more than capable of getting 4.0ghz.

I am at 4.0ghz with 1.32v.

If non-sli, any good p35 board will do. DFI, ABIT, Gigabyte..all works.

So I've decided against going with SLI because chances are that I'll be running games at 1280x1024 max for the most part. I guess SLI performance really only kicks in when running really high resolutions at high quality? I'm also dropping down to the E8400 as you suggested due to the price difference. The extra 0.16 GHz and a 9.5 vs 9.0 multiplier doesn't seem to be worth the $70 price difference. That money is better spent towards a nicer video card.

So should I go with a P35 board or an X38 to future-proof my system a bit?

At that resoluation, P35. No point to crossfire later.

I just would save the money from E8500 to E8400, X38 to a good p35..like DFI DK, and use all that extra money to buy a good and power single video card.

It will do you good until your next BIG upgrade, which will probably a new monitor. At the current res, a 9800gtx or the like will max everything out.

Everything I read tells me that the DFI BIOS is a mess and makes overclocking a bit harder. I don't have much experience overclocking and just didn't want to get in over my head with DFI.

I agree.

IMO:

The E8500 isn't worth the extra $80 for a 10x multi. You should be able to see the full OC potential of the E8400 with it's 9x multi. Especially with the overclocking ability of the P35 chipset. I wouldn't get an X38 or 780i unless you plan on using dual GFX cards.

As for video cards, I would recommend a single 8800GTS G92 over a 9800GTX. They are practically the same card. As long as we're talking about price-to-performance here, it's been proven that a 9800GTX performs ~4% better than a 8800GTS G92, yet the GTX will generally cost you around $75 more.

Yea, I was strongly considering the 8800GTS after looking at various benchmarks. It's performance comes really close to the 9800 GTX.

So taking that into consideration, I should stick with a p35 board? Any specific board suggestions? I think I'm partial to Asus and Gigabyte but I'm open to others.

p45 buddies... get with the program.
wait for the 4850 to come out, see how it stacks out.

P5Q - Single PCI-express, cheaper
P5Q PRO- double but slightly more expensive.
If you feel like you need wi fi, theres always the p5q-e

Raruk, have you conciderd waiting 10 days? Atis new 4850/4870 come out then, and the 4850 is only 200, and is faster than the 8800gts 512

That's a good point. Wasn't thinking about that. You may want to wait until the new cards are out until you make a final decision.
