E8500 and...? - Page 2

Well I took a look at the Asus P5Q Deluxe reviews and benchmarks and when it came to gaming, the Gigabyte x48 DQ6 came out 5-10% faster:

I'm a bit skeptical when it comes to ATI now. I currently have a Sapphire X1800XL and despite everything I've tried, I frequently get VPU recovery errors. The driver stops responding, screen freezes for a second, goes black since no signal is being sent to my monitor(s). Any sound that was playing at the time will loop and eventually (hopefully) my screen refreshes and I can keep playing. If it happens too much in a short span of time, eventually the game just flat out blanks out (there is still audio) and I have to end the process. After that I'm unable to start up any 3D application until I reboot.

I tried alternate drivers, older drivers, underclocking, full reformat of my system with BIOS, chipset and sound driver updates etc etc. I can't seem to diagnose the problem, its fairly random and happens with half the games I play, regardless of the graphic settings I'm using.

So yea, ATI would have to release something pretty amazing to regain my trust.

I'm probably a month away from buying parts and putting together my system, I'm just seeing what my options are.

Are you using Vista 64 bit? That is a very common occurance. It happens just as frequently with ATI as with nVidia.

That helps a lot although when I use it I have to uninstall w/DCP roboot, uninstall again w/DCP then install the new driver. Sometimes if I'm still having problems in games I uninstall and reinstall the games.

Yea, I've tried all of that...unfortunately nothing worked. I think I went through a month's worth of research, troubleshooting and other people's suggestions earlier this year before I gave up on it. I just used the most 'stable' driver I could find and lived with the problem. It's recently resurfaced regularly while playing Age of Conan.
