I would defrag more often for sure, at least once a week. I defrag everytime I uninstall/install anything.

What are the temps of your card?

if its just a generic 550 it might not have enough amps on the 12v rail to power the 9600 still. hopefully it does but i am convinced its your psu. like said above though, battlefield shouldn't lag in the menu. this happening with any other games?

yeah, personal preference for defragging i guess, but thanks for the tip though. as i've said this only seems to be a problem with the card, the operating system is complete and intact, i haven't had any problems until i put this card in.

35c idle, can't test under load

EDIT every game i try to opem cod4, hl2:dm (via steam) bf2 and even the "adjust image settings with preview" tab on nvidia control paned with the nvidia logo, its laggs so much it takes 5-10 seconds for it to twitch my mouse to where i've moved it

I actually doubt if his PSU is really the problem. My PC runs on an unknown brand PSU which has 400W and 16 Amp on the +12V line. My system is stable (CPU overclocked) even when playing Crysis with everything on high for some hours.

I would recommend to format your HDD. Or you can either create a small partition and install XP on that and test again.
This also might be rather stupid to say but be sure all your drivers are updated. Especially chipset and videocard drivers. Also be sure to check if there are no weird programs running on the background. Your temperature idle looks fine btw.

Also, if I did understand properly, the card runs on your brother's pc fine?
If not, and everything I just suggested did not help, I would either blame the GPU or the PSU.

definitely a PSU problem imho.

your OS is fine and disc is clean/defragged
temps are fine

often PSU manufacturers, especially the cheap ones overstate their spec's, yours says 21A on the +12V but it might not really be making that claim. The PSU is the heart of your PC. A quality PSU is definitley one of the most if not most important parts of your hardware.

I find this hard to believe but do agree with you about him reformatting.

yeah, i agree the psu is imprtant, although the card itself is fine, as we've said, the psu seems to be the culprit at this stage... i've just backed up 30 odd ggigs of stuff and i'm goning to format and reinstall windows

its about time for a reformat anyway, i just really can't see how it could be the psu... but after a format, that'll just about be the only thing left really, it shouldn't take too ong to reinstall the os and bf2, probably an hour or so, so i will report back with the results, and more suggestions are welcome and appreciated still, but as of now, i'm reformatting anyway =)

EDIt you can't swap hard drives due to windows protection... it chucks a spaz if you try to boot

Yeah I know it is kinda weird (I can prove it though with a photo) I think the system is pushing my PSU to the extreme I think that's also the reason when booting up my PC the fan makes a terrible noise (Stops after some time or when I hit the thing ^^) It never did that before.
Anyway I'm gonna upgrade my PC next week with a whole lot of new parts so I will also buy the Corsair TX650 or 750.

I really hope that reformatting your system helps you to fix the problem. I hate RMAing.. because I hate to wait It wouldn't hurt to get a better PSU btw.
