im not sure how cs source is

you want maximum power efficiency, you want it to use as least watts as possible, a quad is gonna be overkill for one server, and you want reliable, some 24/7 components might burn out randomly and start a fire (had it happen before)

15mbps up is beastly....that is corporate speeds....im jealous of your fios lol
that is nothing compared to my server has 100mbps up. I think the download is like 50mpbs.

lol, wow I thought this thread of mine had died.. I even took it off my Firefox Bookmarks toolbar ...

You don't need to use a server mobo in your situation. Trust me.

My advice is to use a handy little server management program called TCAdmin. You pay $15/month for it, but it manages any game from CSS to CoD4. You can setup servers extremely easy with it. It's controlled via web browser too. I highly recommend it. I manage 10 CSS servers, a CoD4 server, a TF2 server, and a Gary's Mod server with it.
hmm I will have to look into that, I used to run a couple CS:S servers before and I used "Windows Remote Desktop Connection" what can that program do for me that would be worth the $15 a month?

Yeah, the CPU I just bought is a bit of a power hog, but I had very little money to build this server with (see bottom of post for specs), lol yeah I can not wait for that kind of speed... Big improvement over what I currently have (200kbps down/ 20kbps up)

This is what my setup is going to possibly be... (tell me what ya think)

CPU: Pentuim D820 G0 (just traded on OCN, its on its way)
MoBo: GIGABYTE GA-945GM-S2 (haven't bought yet)
RAM: Kingston 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 667 (haven't bought yet)
HD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB (already have)

Total Price: $127.00 (not bad )

What do you guys think? Anything else that you would recommend for my server?... I really can't spend much more on anything, but If there is a part or something that could really help then please post..

I suppose your fine if you want to host only a scrim server. I would suggest a Conroe.

When it comes to a residential server I would have to say your going to be looking at the best setup you can possibly have. I'm not sure if your intentions are to just host private servers for you and your friends, or if you want to have public servers running 24/7 and you actually want people in them? To be honest, if you are looking to host public servers, and you want to have people in them, a company hosted server would be A LOT better. I don't think enough people will have good ping times to your server for you to get people to join it and play. If you just want to host private servers than you are more than set. Good luck!

Well I just finished calculating what bandwidth I will need. These are the servers I want to run.

Server Rates and Ticks

~~Scrim Server~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
100tick
10 slots
sv_maxrate 30000
sv_maxupdaterate 100
fps_max 600
Theoretical required Upload Bandwidth: 2.40Mps

~~Public Server~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
66tick
24 slots
sv_maxrate 20000
sv_maxupdaterate 66
fps_max 600
Theoretical required Upload Bandwidth: 2.40Mps

~~Zombie Server~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
33tick
40 slots
sv_maxrate 7500
sv_maxupdaterate 60
fps_max 600
Theoretical required Upload Bandwidth: 2.4Mps

~~Gun Game Server~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
66tick
36 slots
sv_maxrate 10000
sv_maxupdaterate 60
fps_max 600
Theoretical required Upload Bandwidth: 2.88Mps

10.08Mps Up Used (if all severs are full)
4.92Mps Up Free
+ or - 3.5mps (Server Overhead)

I am sure that my Internet connection can handle the upload bandwidth I will need, as I doubt all four server will be full at one time.

As for my server having enough processing power to do it, I have no clue.

And the pings on these servers that others will get, I don't know.

My old server that I ran out of my friends house had two zombie mod servers, a Scrim server, and a public server. He had 2mps up Internet. And everybody usually got an excellent ping 80<. The zombie servers were almost always full as well. We had the maps and other downloads hosted on a GoDaddy web server (which I plan to do something similar for this one).

Couple things to think about:

1. Residential internet connections often don't have very good upload ping times. FIOS might change that, but I would expect an extra +50ms to go through the residential backbone compared to a server that's right on a Tier 1 or 2 provider.

2. If you have a crappy router, upgrade it. It can actually make a signficant difference in ping times, especially with many user connected to your server. Look at a Cisco router if you can afford it - they are enterprise class, and are made to handle well under thousands of connections. For me, even going from a Belkien router to a better Netgear router saved me about 15ms on the ping times for connected users. I would expect Cisco to give even better results.

Dammn, Cisco routers are expensive... but very nice.

Lets see I have three routers rite now... Which of the three would work best? (probably none )

NETGEAR FVS318
D-Link DI-624
3Com OfficeConnect TP4

Also if someone could suggest an affordable router that would work good..

My suggestion is the WRT54GL Linksys router. Easiest to modify/mod/flash bios to much better software.

Ok, first - take all the tickrates and make them 66tick. Do not do 100tick, they are just gimmicks. Valve themselves have admitted it, 100tick does not lead to any performance increase at all.

Anything above 66tick does nothing special. Tick refers the the packets of information to and from the server, and EVERY player would need to set their rates to specific numbers on 100tick server if they wish to seek some benefit. Which they will NOT gain. It's a gimmick.

33tick to 66tick will be a major difference. Change everything to 66tick.
And fps_max really doesn't affect much. Server defaults are fps_max 300.
