I'm not familiar with MCE 2005 but would reccomend xp pro SP2 at least as an OS.
MCE '05 is Pro SP2 with added features like Media Center, and Media Connect. Little gadgets and gizmos like Windows Dancer, Windows CD lable Maker. So junk. LOL. Just lettin' you know for future reference

thank you very much! I had no idea what that was, but I thought it was something similar to media edition.

ok guys, if ouy all feel the need to goan at what i'm sure is a silly question then feel free. But he is the extent of my ignorance. If i run Visat 64 bit OS will my 3d max 8 still work and the other aps? Is the 64 bit version that much better and if so how, or is it just flat speed.

The reason for the MC Edition is beause as the guy on pay one said i've got a stonking Media PC which does my design work also.

thanks

if you switch over to vista64 you will definitely need to get new drivers for everything and any programs you use will have to be compatible. I still use Xp so I'm no expert by any means.

64-bit is fine for driver support now. I have just upgraded from 32-bit and the only thing that wouldn't work was my scanner - everything else was absolutly fine, and now all 4gb of my RAM is used. I'll just have a qick look to see if anyone has 64-bit drivers for that card but I doubt it . Really the upgrade to vista from what you currently have isn't worth it unless you go 64-bit for future RAM upgrades. The speed difference isn't much, not really noticable at all. But 64-bit is definately the way everything is moving - Windows 7 is reputed to be 64-bit ONLY (i.e no 32-bit virtualisation)

i'd stick with 32-bit, tried and true

64-bit continues to have driver/app problems, although they are improving somewhat.

64-bit linux is awesome though

Ah the Linux debate. I know a few old bijers who are into linux in a big way, but they still haven't inspired me to give it a whirl and i doubt i will but you never can be certain about these things. When bill steps down the **** might hit the fan and we all might end up on linux !
