GTX 260 or 280

Thread Starter
Just wondering, I am planning to upgrade from two 8800GTX in SLI to either the GTX 260 or GTX 280 but my budget is low should I just settle for two GTX 260 or should I pay the little difference to get the 280 GTX.

why? the only game out right now that needs the new gfx cards is crysis, all other games can be basically maxed with a mainstream card such as the 8800 gt.

Hard to say right now mate, not enough hard evidence that these cards are any good to be honest. The GTX 280 will cost around $650 for a reference stock card. I would advise and waiting for some true user results or someone like Toms Hardware etc get their hands on some.

Then decide...

EDIT: I have to agree with the above poster though, nothing needs anything like SLI/TRI SLI or even Quad SLI apart from one badly coded game. Not worth the time or your money imo.

Be glad with what you have now. That card is still powerful, even a year after it was released.

I would wait a bit for the prices on the new 2xxGTX series to go down before buying one.

correct...but I would rather have a card that can handle the future gaming and, I already returned my two 8800GTX because they couldn't handle crysis at 1600 by 1200 resolution with no AA or AF

Erm... What are you using now as a video card?

And two 8800GTX's should be able to handle that. I would expect the bottleneck to be your CPU, especially if it's stock.

If you are still running the GTX cards, definitely hold onto them till the price drops on the new cards. I would love to have some GTX cards in SLI. If you absolutely have to have a next gen card, and price is a concern, then get the 260 because from what it looks like now, the 280 may be $200 more. That of course could change.
