I have 2 150GB Raptors in RAID 0. I also purchased 2 WD 640GB AAKS drives. I tried them in RAID 0 also. They were nearly as fast as the Raptors and way cheaper.

OH LORD....you have no idea what you are talking about.
You need to compare AVERAGE SPEED....not burst speed...

I dont mean to sound rude...but if you are in the market for fast hard drives..you got to at least know what you are talking about.

I am not putting the WD320 or 640AAKS down, they are good drives...at least the newer 320 platter drives are, but raptors are my preference.

BTW...you did something wrong with the 640 drives. They should be at least 130 average for two in RAID.

I bought a raptor awhile back and didn't really notice that much of a gain...at least nothing worth the extra $$$ that I had to put down for it. I was just wondering if anyone could provide me with some insight as to what benefits such harddrives might provide besides higher benchmark scores....

Those average speeds are slow for the 7200. My 2x320GB get about 135MB/s average.
The advantages of 10k: low seek times, high average speed.
Burst speed really does you nothing.
---
You will see benefits when you are loading large files (CAD files, uncompressed video, ect) and when you are working with lots and lots of really small files since it will load faster due to low seek time. It will also allow you to boot faster.
