[STILL NEED HELP] Trying to Overclock q6600 on a 680i

Thread Starter
Hi, i am trying to overclock my quad core q6600 but i can't seem to find a good guide. I have a nVidia 680i LT SLI mobo and two 1gig OCZ Ram chips(total 2 gigs ram) and a 700 watt psu. If anyone can walk me through here or link me to a guide which uses same mobo and cpu then i would be very thankful.

EDIT: Still need help
EDIT2: Read my reply below..

More to come in a bit...

That's ok, the items to disable will be the same for any cpu and the changes in BIOS will be the same too..just a little different on voltages. Now your board is an XFX and mine is an eVGA so I do not know how the BIOS will vary between the two (mine is based on a Phoenix Award BIOS, ver 6.0).

Here are some links from the docs I sent you that are worthy of review (most stuff out there is for the 680i but 95% relevant...I can try to help you on the rest):

http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.asp?m=61146&mpage=1&key=

http://www.nvidia.com/docs/CP/45121/...erclocking.pdf

http://uk.gear.ign.com/articles/747/747671p1.html

...and from this very board (if you had not seen already):

http://www.overclock.net/intel-mothe...ce-boards.html

http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...x-680i-lt.html -> this one you will find very interesting!

Ok, go do some homework and let us know how it goes and/or if you have some specific questions...this board is full of peeps with knowledge, many others with much more than me!

Ok so i followed the guides and stuff and tried to overclock to around 3 GHz.. and when i started pc it started up all ok but as soon i got into windows and logged in. It crashed and shutdown completely.. not even reset.. just died..had to wipe out my cmos.. so maybe i did something wrong or yeah..

This is my first time overclock so i am very nervous.. please help me find a guide that is specifically for q6600 and 680i LT SLI mobo Thanks

Ok, couple of questions...

1. Did you raise your FSB in small increments or go straight to 3.0ghz (what QDR did you set for the 6600)?
2. What are all your voltages at for your CPU vcore, CPU FSB, memory & SPP?
3. How are you runing your FSB vs RAM? Are you linked or unlinked, etc?

...unfortunately, I don't think there is a guide for the q6600 and 680i LT...there are guides but not for this combo, at least that I have seen.

Also, I would ask others looking at this thread to chime in with their thoughts once OP comes back with specifics...the more the merrier.

OK!!
so i read a few other guides and found out that i dont have to change voltage all the time to get small overclocks.. so i changed my fsb and got the clock from 2.4 to 2.66ghz (yay?)

now my other question is.. to get to around 3 ghz i would assume i need more voltage...
right now my cpu is at 1.3125V
how much voltage do u think i would need for 3 ghz?

or should i just do the "trial and error" thing.. i just dont wanna fry my cpu haha

Don't raise your cpu volts yet....you really probably won't need to. What are your current volts and ram settings. I have a 680i (not the exact same board but close) and the same cpu so maybe I can help you out a bit.

edit: by ram settings I mean timings, volts and if its linked or unlinked these are very important.

I have some bad news for you my friend....The LT and AR/TR boards are cost reduced versions of the A1/T1 680i. They lack the GTL reference voltage to overclock quad-cores. check this thread

http://www.overclock.net/intel-mothe...ce-boards.html

The Quote in the very first post explains it a little better. I have one of these boards myself and a Q6600. I can manipulate it all day long and I will not be able to go past 2.799Ghz. The board just wont do it with a Quad.

It will OC the heck out of any Dual Core - but Quads will not. Sorry man.

Trial and Error is the only way to go. not all CPU's take the same voltages. Just keep in mind the MAX voltage limits. 1.5vcore for the CPU / 1.5v CPU FSB / 1.5v SPP / and ur memory's rated maximum voltage. not sayin just go right to these but if u end up getting close to these then u need to reduce ur FSB to a lower clock or your doin something wrong.
