Now that the GTA hype has settle, what are your views on it?

Thread Starter
I bought it on launch, I stayed away from previews etc so my hype/expectations would not be high. I personally think this game in no way, shape or form deserves the 10's it received all over the place. I was bored and didn't feel like beating the game at around 20-25%. I ended up selling it online.

I didn't not like the gunplay and the missions seemed very boring/repetitive, imo I think Crackdown is still the best sandbox/free roam game I have played. The story certainly isn't great but I had way more fun.

The only reason I haven't beaten it yet is because of Age of Conan. I love the game. I have had a lot of urges to play it the last couple days but I have been busy and tired (I don't play games when either of those are currently 1s).

I think it deserved the 10s.

One of the best games i've played in a long time. One of the few games i've actually beat in the last few years without getting bored.

i agree with the OP, my personal experience is that the more a game is hyped, the least likely i am to like it. i think im missing whatever bone it is in my body that buys into 'hype'

i dont think it deserves 10s either. more like a 7.5 to me. Its fun (to me) just because of the cars, characters, and environment/options. the shooting, controls, police, missions, and health systems are terrible. some parts are fun as heck but there are too many pointless missions. I agree with you on Crackdown too. If they made a Crackdown 2 I would be much happier

Crackdown is an awesome game! I'll get GTA4 when it comes out for PC.

And that's exactly why it received a score of 10. Like you said, it's one of the best in a while. There hasn't been a good game in a similar category, so when a good game finally comes out, everybody thinks it's perfect.

IMO, San Andreas was better.

I think the game warranted a 8.5-9 tops. It is an incredibly fun game, however, the combat system, though much improved, still has it's quirks. The cover system is good however sometimes it's hard to get behind the object that you are trying to use. The vehicle shooting is very good once you take the time to practice it. The multiplayer component while fun, seems like it is added on at the last second. Honestly is it really necessary to have a load screen when you respawn? Other multiplayer games have not had this issue and it sadly detracts from the gameplay.

Everything else about the game is amazing. The graphics are great for a game that has so many places to travel. The radio stations and the music are well thought out and feel like they are appropriate to the theme of the game.

I'm almost halfway through and I can say that I'm hooked on it. I do however agree with those that have said that the game does not deserve a 10 but rather a score in the range of 8.5-9.
