nvidia 8600 vs ati x1950 - Page 2

I'd say the cards were about even, I thought the x1950's were faster, though depends on the test - they can certainly handle AA better. When choosing my card I was torn between the 8600gts and the x1950pro. If you can pick them up for the same price I'd be sorely tempted to go for the ATI, even without DX10. Essentially, the 1950GT is slightly better than the 8600GTS, turn up the resolution and AA, and you're pulling away from the 8600series at a rate.

Then again, the GTS handles everything I throw at it (albeit at 1280x1024) and while it won't set the world alight - it'll do alright (though will have to lower options to up the fps in the near future).

Personally, you'll be making graphical comprimises with either of the 2 cards you choose to go with, maybe not quite as severely as the 8500, but I'm not expecting my GTS to hold its own past the current crop of Unreal Engine games (gears, Mass Effect, which I can max). Bit pessimistic I know, but I don't mind - I can work on a budget, medium settings aren't all bad

Let's clear this up a little.

An X1950GT 256MB performs about the same, on average, as an 8600GTS 256MB.

Here is a graph from Tom's Hardware comparing overall games performance in FPS for some related cards:

Considering how things are going i wouldnt buy either... Wait a little bit and see what happens to 8800GS/GT prices or even the 3850 or 3870 Going from a 8500 to an 8600/1950 isnt going to improve your performance much at all. If i were you id OC the nuts of that card and make it last a little longer and save for something much better like a 8800GT Trust me you wont regret it... Buying a 8600 at this stage is a waste of money

X1950GT?

I'd go with the 8600GTS

But for that price range, an 8800GS/Radeon HD3850 would be much better than both those cards

Sorry for my momentary lapse in remembering how much of a beast the R500 series was

The only advantage I could see in this case that the 8600GT/GTS has over the ATI cards is DirectX10, but as I can see, you don't have Vista, so I guess it wouldn't make that much of a difference.
