Running with 2 P3s?

Hey guys, first hello, I'm new. Second, I just bought a 1 GHz P3 online and it should be coming tommorow. See, I have a Dell Precision 420 Workstation MiniTower (MT). It has two slots for slot-1 CPUs, so I decided to get another, the current one I have in there is a 933 MHz. My question is, do I need to do something special for Windows XP and all my programs to take advantage of this extra gigahert or will it just use the processor in the first slot by default, or will it do something like with the Dual-,Quad-,Octuple-core machines and "join both the speeds together" for lack of a better statement. I know Linux does this but I'm just worried about XP right now.

Programs that are coded to take advantage of multiple cores will use both.

XP will see both CPU's as they are. One @ 1GHZ and one @ 933MHZ. You could say that you'll be running two cores at a minimum of 933MHZ each

Just to let you know, the P3 CPUs are somewhat hard to get to play nice with each other when running dual. I remember way back when when we had a dual cpu motherboard with only a single CPU, we had to get ones that had a matching manufacture code to get them to run dual. They wouldn't be the same manufacture code in this case because they weren't bought at the same time, and are completely different speeds.

If it doesn't work..maybe you can give that 933mhz pIII to the "legendary" one...

Sorry if you don't know who I am referring to.

so there is a possibility that it might now work? If not my friend has another 933 MHz P3 that I could by for $50 which is way over priced, but it definitely works with the other one.

Please just spend the 100 dollars and buy These:

Core 2 Duo E1200:

DFI LGA775 MicroATX motherboard:

Really man, you won't regret it. wasting your time with P3s is exactly that... a waste of time, that one E1200 is easily 10x better than the setup you would have if you even got those two P3s to work together, which you probably won't because its damn near impossible to find two of them that are compatible, even if they are the same stock clockspeeds, they aren't guaranteed to work with each other.

I don't mean to come off hostile in any way, I just hate seeing people trying to salvage hardware that should have been scrapped 5-10 years ago.

And I know, I know the old argument that "it still works for me" but really man, think of how much more you could get done with a fast processor

This is for my development computer, I'm not going to spend $100 for a new MB and CPU. I also doubt it fits my PC.

I have another PC with an AMD 4600 x2
